Madrid Extends Moratorium: Older Cars Without Environmental Badges Can Circulate Until 2027

Madrid, December 12, 2025 – In a significant announcement for motorists, Madrid City Council has decided to extend the moratorium for vehicles without environmental badges, allowing them to continue circulating until December 31, 2026. This decision, confirmed by the city’s Mobility Department, provides a reprieve for thousands of vehicles registered in the capital that were facing restrictions from January 2026.

Moratorium Extension: A Relief for Thousands of Drivers

The extension of the moratorium means that cars without environmental badges from the DGT – primarily petrol vehicles predating 2001 and diesel vehicles predating 2006 – will retain their freedom of movement within the municipal area until the end of 2026. This move modifies the Sustainable Mobility Ordinance and postpones the full implementation of the Low Emission Zone (ZBE) restrictions, which were slated to cover the entire city from January 2026.
