Barcelona, December 22 – The Barcelona Urban Guard, through its Investigation Unit and with the collaboration of the L’Eixample Territorial Unit, arrested an individual on Thursday, December 18, in connection with a series of intentional fires in the Sant Antoni neighborhood during November and December. The detainee was brought before a judge this past weekend.
Investigation Links Suspect to Five Incidents
The ongoing investigation has successfully linked the arrested individual to five distinct criminal incidents, primarily involving the burning of waste containers and other pieces of urban furniture. The most recent of these incidents occurred on December 17 on Villarroel Street, where three containers were set ablaze.
These acts have resulted in significant financial losses for the Barcelona City Council. These costs stem not only from the replacement of damaged materials but also from the expenses associated with emergency services’ intervention, post-incident clean-up operations, and the subsequent repairs to public spaces.
Impact on Quality of Life and Public Safety
Data collected indicates that these fires have had a direct and detrimental impact on the quality of life for residents. They have led to the degradation of public spaces, the accumulation of waste, and environmental pollution. Furthermore, these incidents have posed a serious risk to the safety and health of the public, as they frequently occurred during daylight hours, coinciding with periods of high pedestrian traffic and school dismissal times. The potential for fire spread and the inhalation of toxic fumes present a particularly elevated danger to children, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations.
One of the investigated incidents is of particular gravity, as the fire originated directly on the facade of a residential building. This created a perilous situation, hindering the exit of occupants and placing their physical integrity at significant risk.
Arrest and Evidence Seizure
The arrest took place after a patrol located the suspect on Comte d’Urgell Street. The individual was wearing clothing identical to that seen in surveillance footage provided by an office near one of the fire sites. Patrolling officers unequivocally recognized the individual.
During a search, authorities found and seized a jar containing flammable liquid, a blowtorch-style lighter, and a box of matches. These items have been included in the official police report as evidence.
Urban Guard’s Commitment to Public Safety
The Urban Guard has commended the investigative work conducted, which led to the identification and apprehension of the alleged perpetrator. This successful operation reaffirms the force’s unwavering commitment to citizen safety, the protection of public spaces, and fostering harmonious coexistence within the city’s neighborhoods.
