Madrid Residents Urged to Cooperate as Waste Collection Halts for Holidays
The Madrid City Council has issued a reminder regarding the suspension of waste collection services during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. Residents are asked for their cooperation to prevent the accumulation of trash on public streets.
Key Dates and Times Without Service:
- Christmas Eve: Wednesday, December 24 (night)
- Christmas Day: Thursday, December 25 (morning and afternoon)
- New Year’s Eve: Wednesday, December 31 (night)
- New Year’s Day: Thursday, January 1 (morning and afternoon)
During these specified periods, there will be no collection of domestic waste, paper/cardboard, or glass. The City Council emphasizes the importance of not leaving bags or bins on public thoroughfares.
Reinforcement and Intensification of Services:
To mitigate the impact of the suspended services, the City Council has confirmed that cleaning operations will be reinforced from the night of December 25 and throughout December 26. This measure aims to clear the waste generated during the Christmas festivities promptly.
“Collection services for organic, plastic, metal, brick, and non-recyclable waste will be intensified in the days following the holidays, allowing for a rapid normalization of the service,” the City Council stated in a press release.
Extraordinary Holiday Waste Collection Plan:
An “extensive extraordinary waste collection plan” has been in effect since the Black Friday weekend and will continue throughout the holiday season. This initiative is designed to manage the increased volume of waste typically generated during this time of year.
Special Cleaning for Major Events:
The City Council also has comprehensive cleaning plans in place for major public celebrations in Madrid. For events such as the San Silvestre Vallecana 2025 race, special services will be deployed. Similarly, the Three Kings Parade on January 6, 2026, will see a significant deployment of resources, including “162 human personnel, comprising drivers and operators, and 67 mechanical means, including sweepers, washers, and compacting trucks,” along its route.
