BARCELONA, Catalonia – The Institució de les Lletres Catalanes, through the Office of Cultural Initiative Support, has officially opened a new call for grant applications. These subsidies are specifically designed for publishers to facilitate the translation of literary works from languages other than Spanish into Catalan or Occitan. The program aims to bolster linguistic diversity and cultural enrichment within Catalonia.

Grant Details and Eligibility Criteria

The initiative encompasses both print books and audiobooks, offering substantial financial assistance. Successful applicants will receive support covering up to 70% of the total project cost. Eligible expenses primarily include translation and correction services, ensuring high-quality linguistic output.

To qualify for these grants, publishing houses must be domiciled in a member state of the European Union or an associated state of the European Economic Area. Crucially, the proposed translation project must demonstrate a direct impact or relevance within Catalonia. Furthermore, translated works must adhere to specified minimum character counts and print runs, varying according to the type of literary piece. A key condition of the grant is a guaranteed minimum remuneration for translators of 14 euros per 2,100 characters with spaces, underscoring a commitment to fair compensation for linguistic professionals. Each publishing house is permitted to submit up to six distinct projects, with a separate application required for each.

Compatibility with Other Funding and Application Deadline

These new grants are compatible with other existing subsidy programs offered by the Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals, specifically those for editorial production and audiobooks. This compatibility allows publishers to potentially leverage multiple funding sources for their projects. Project expenditures eligible for subsidy must have occurred either during the year of the grant award or in the preceding year.

Publishers interested in applying for these grants have until September 25, 2026, at 2 PM to submit their applications. Detailed information regarding the call for applications can be found in the Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC).

This strategic investment in literary translation by the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes highlights a concerted effort to promote and preserve the Catalan and Occitan languages, fostering a more diverse and vibrant cultural ecosystem in Barcelona and across Catalonia.
