Madrid’s Teleférico Disconnects from the Past: Old Cables Removed for Modernization
Madrid, January 19 – The iconic Teleférico de Madrid has commenced a significant modernization project this week, starting with the removal of its original cable system. This initial phase is crucial for the aerial tramway’s complete overhaul, aiming for a grand reopening in 2027 with enhanced safety and a renewed passenger experience, as confirmed by the Madrid City Council.
The decision to modernize follows a mandatory closure in 2022 due to structural safety concerns identified during an inspection. The current works are a direct response to these issues, ensuring the Teleférico meets contemporary safety and operational standards.
A Farewell to the Old System: Cables from 1969 Come Down
Since Tuesday, the city council has been actively dismantling the cable system installed in 1969. This marks a symbolic farewell to the infrastructure that has, for decades, transported thousands of passengers over the Casa de Campo to Pintor Rosales, offering panoramic views of the city.
Borja Carabante, head of the relevant city department, stated that the removal of the existing cabling is a key step in separating the aerial infrastructure from the terminal stations, which supported the old system. This will pave the way for a completely new setup.
New Technology and Panoramic Cabins on the Horizon
The modernization plan involves replacing the current bicable system with a more advanced monocable system. This will include the introduction of 47 new panoramic cabins, each designed to accommodate ten people. These state-of-the-art cabins are being manufactured by Doppelmayr in Switzerland, a leader in aerial lift technology.
Following the cable removal, the Madrid City Council, in collaboration with the Municipal Transport Company (EMT), will begin constructing new tower bases and installing modern electrical motors at both the Pintor Rosales and Casa de Campo stations. The terminal buildings will also undergo architectural redesigns to integrate seamlessly with the surroundings and improve accessibility.
Enhanced Safety, Accessibility, and Sustainability
The revamped Teleférico will incorporate intelligent sensors in both cabins and pylons, ensuring greater safety through real-time flow analysis and alert systems. Advanced cybersecurity protocols and digital integration will provide passengers with real-time service information.
Beyond technological upgrades, the project emphasizes environmental sustainability and accessibility. The new design aims to reduce emissions, optimize energy consumption, and minimize the carbon footprint within Casa de Campo. Furthermore, the city council highlights that the renovation will offer a more inclusive service with clear signage, chromatic support, and differentiated paving to facilitate movement within the stations.
A 26 Million Euro Investment for a Future Icon
The comprehensive reform of the Teleférico de Madrid is slated for completion in 2027. Upon its reopening, it is expected to reclaim its status as one of Madrid’s most visited tourist attractions. The government of José Luis Martínez-Almeida has invested over 26 million euros in this ambitious project, underscoring its commitment to modernizing the city’s infrastructure and enhancing its appeal.
