Guardia Civil Seeks Public Help to Solve 2005 Barcelona Murder as Statute of Limitations Approaches
Barcelona, February 1, 2026 – The Guardia Civil has launched a public appeal for assistance to solve the murder of Magdalena Mas Vilaltella, whose remains were discovered on August 6, 2005, in the Sant Pere Sacama area of Olesa de Montserrat, Barcelona. With the 20-year statute of limitations for the crime approaching, investigators are intensifying efforts to identify the perpetrator(s) of this violent death.
The Discovery and Initial Investigation in 2005
In 2005, human remains were found inside several plastic bags in a wooded area of Sant Pere Sacama. Forensic reports at the time determined the victim to be a woman between 35 and 45 years old, showing clear signs of violent death. Scientific analysis revealed a fractured left cheekbone, consistent with a blow from a blunt object, and a possible projectile entry point in the right shoulder blade. Despite initial efforts, the body could not be identified at that time.
Identification Through the Fénix Program in 2014
The victim was finally identified in 2014 through the Fénix program, a genetic identification initiative for missing persons. This program, developed by the Genetic Identification Laboratory of the University of Granada in collaboration with the Guardia Civil, compares DNA profiles of unidentified human remains with samples from relatives of missing persons. A positive match confirmed the victim as Magdalena Mas Vilaltella, a 38-year-old resident of Sant Pere de Riudoms, Tarragona. Her disappearance had been reported on April 9, 2005, a day after she was last seen, at the National Police Station in Reus, Tarragona.
The investigation, led by the Persons Group of the Organic Unit of Judicial Police (UOPJ) of the Guardia Civil in Barcelona, has remained active since the discovery of the body. Various lines of inquiry have been pursued with the aim of fully clarifying the circumstances of her death and identifying those responsible.
Key Clues Released to the Public
To advance the investigation, the Guardia Civil has released three crucial pieces of evidence:
- Photograph of the Victim: A picture of Magdalena Mas Vilaltella alive, hoping that anyone who knew her or has information about her last movements will recognize her and contact investigators.
- CCTV Footage of a Suspect: Images from a bank surveillance camera recorded on April 9, 2005 – the day after Magdalena was last seen – at a bank office on San Roque street in Terrassa, Barcelona. These images show a man withdrawing cash using the victim’s card.
- Fragment of a T-shirt: An image of a T-shirt fragment found during the investigation. The garment bears the English inscription “FUN AND FRIENDS ALTERNATIVE ENERGY PUB LEAGUE.” This T-shirt did not belong to the victim and could be related to the person or persons involved in the events or their associates.
