Madrid Police Launch Preventive Raids to Control Nightlife: 41 Arrested, 1,200 Identified

Madrid, February 3, 2026 – The National Police in Madrid have initiated a new strategy of preventive raids in major nightlife centers across the region and capital. This initiative, coinciding with the arrival of the new Chief Superior, Javier Galván, focuses on citizen security. The first large-scale operation, conducted last weekend, led to 41 arrests and the identification of nearly 1,200 individuals.

The new approach, termed “Violence Prevention Security Devices,” marks a shift from previous raids that were reactive to specific incidents. These new operations are preventive, guided by complaints from citizens and neighbors, as well as nocturnal altercations, as reported by police sources.

First Major Operation Yields Significant Results

The inaugural large-scale operation took place last weekend in the municipalities of Leganés, Torrejón de Ardoz, Fuenlabrada, and Coslada, as well as the districts of Puente de Vallecas and Ciudad Lineal. The results included approximately 1,200 identified individuals and 41 arrests for offenses such as possession of weapons, drug-related crimes, and resisting authority.

“We do not intend to turn nightlife into a police state,” stated the Madrid Police Headquarters in a press release, “but to address those more sensitive areas where large crowds gather and there is a higher risk, and to demonstrate our commitment to citizen security in the region.”

Breakdown of Arrests and Identifications by Location

  • Leganés: Agents conducted six inspections in entertainment venues in the La Cubierta area, a popular weekend spot. This resulted in 32 arrests and 828 identifications. Additionally, six reports were filed for drug possession and three for weapon possession.
  • Torrejón de Ardoz: Four individuals were arrested, and 95 were identified. Three reports were filed for drug possession.
  • Coslada: Five arrests were made among 38 identified individuals. Four reports were filed for drug possession, one for a bladed weapon, and one for disobedience.
  • Fuenlabrada: Agents identified 20 people, filed three reports for drug possession, and two for weapon possession.
  • Puente de Vallecas: Five inspections were carried out in entertainment venues, leading to the identification of 146 people. Fourteen reports were filed for drug possession, and one for possession of a bladed weapon.
  • Ciudad Lineal: An operation from 10:00 PM on January 30 to 5:30 AM on February 1 resulted in 44 identifications, five reports for drug possession, and one for weapon possession.

Increased Police Presence and Future Plans

Since the arrival of Chief Superior Javier Galván in October, the Madrid Police Headquarters has prioritized citizen security, increasing the number of officers by 18%. This enhanced police presence and the preventive and deterrent measures are expected to be a constant going forward, without impeding the enjoyment of nightlife, officials assured.

The last massive and indiscriminate police raids in the capital occurred in March 2022, in response to an increase in deaths from clashes between youth gangs. At that time, agents conducted mass identifications and searches in nightlife areas for several weeks to remove bladed weapons and machetes commonly used by these rival groups.

These new preventive operations will be deployed with varying frequency, depending on the complaints and security demands perceived in each entertainment area. Police sources indicated that while there is no fixed schedule for returning to specific locations, controls will be established in areas with larger crowds, and in bars or nightclubs with a history of conflict.

The design of these operations is flexible, varying in size and not necessarily simultaneous, depending on factors such as weather, expected crowd size, and the type of venues. The operations may involve various police units, including riot police (UIP), rapid reaction teams (UPR), judicial police groups, citizen security units, canine units, and/or immigration units from district or municipal police forces.

Authorities emphasized that these operations are designed to remove bladed weapons and dangerous objects, confisc illegal substances, or locate individuals with active warrants. They clarified that these operations are not directed at the immigrant population and have no connection to immigration law.

“Regardless of whether they meet our expectations, because it can happen-and has happened-that we arrive at a place and there are no people that night,” police sources noted, highlighting the dynamic nature of these preventive measures.
