Windstorm Batters Madrid: Over 500 Firefighter Interventions

The intense wind episode that affected the Community of Madrid on Saturday led to more than 500 emergency calls for incidents such as fallen trees, cornices, chimneys, and fences. Despite the high volume of calls, no serious injuries have been reported so far.

The Sierra region remained under an orange alert due to gusts that reached up to 100 kilometers per hour, and in some areas, even 127 km/h. This alert was active until 3:00 PM. The rest of the region remained under a yellow alert for wind.

Emergency Services Overwhelmed but Effective

In the city of Madrid, municipal firefighters responded to 123 incidents between 6:00 AM and 1:30 PM. Of these, 47 were related to trees and 21 to building facades. Emergency services prioritized calls posing a risk to people and those affecting the city’s functionality.

The 112 emergency service for the Community of Madrid processed 873 wind-related reports across the region in recent hours. The Community’s firefighters carried out nearly 400 operations, none of which involved serious injuries.

Additionally, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) maintained a yellow alert for wind on Saturday, February 14, in the Metropolitan and Henares areas, with maximum gusts expected to reach 70 kilometers per hour.

Road Closures and Winter Operations

Due to heavy snowfall and the severe weather, several roads, particularly in mountainous areas, were preventively closed to avoid unnecessary travel and hazardous situations. Accesses to these roads were cut off from early Saturday morning. These included the M-601, M-604, and CL-&01 roads leading to the mountain passes, as well as the M-637 to Navafría. By 4:20 PM, all roads had reopened to normal traffic.

The winter road maintenance operation by the Directorate General of Roads remained active throughout the night. It comprised 69 personnel and thirteen snowplow trucks to facilitate traffic and minimize the impact of weather conditions on the roadways. They reported using over 27 tons of salt and 5,866 liters of brine.

Weather Outlook for Sunday

Aemet forecasts high cloud intervals for most of the Community of Madrid on Sunday, with minimum temperatures slightly decreasing and maximum temperatures rising. In the Sierra, the sky will be cloudy, and morning mists or fogs are not ruled out in high areas, with the possibility of weak to moderate frosts, potentially occurring locally in the easternmost part of the Community. A light west-component wind will blow, with moderate intervals in the afternoon.
