Barcelona, a popular European tourist destination, has unfortunately secured the third spot in a global ranking of cities with the most tourist thefts. This places it behind only Paris and Rome, according to a report compiled by Radical Storage, a leading digital luggage storage company in Europe.
Radical Storage Report Highlights Insecurity
Radical Storage conducted its analysis by examining over 13,000 reviews related to insecurity, petty theft, and fraud experienced by tourists. The findings reveal a concerning trend in three of Europe’s most visited cities: Paris, Rome, and Barcelona. While these destinations are highly attractive to travelers, visitors are advised to remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to such crimes.
Factors Contributing to Tourist Insecurity
Alessandro Seina, CEO of Radical Storage, explained the common characteristics of these top-ranking cities. “These three cities are characterized by large volumes of tourists at their main attractions and crowded public transport, which, combined with opportunistic criminal activity by certain groups, creates the perfect breeding ground for insecurity and theft targeting tourists, who are often distracted and unfamiliar with the environment or local customs,” Seina stated.
Prevention Measures Recommended for Tourists
To mitigate the risk of theft, Radical Storage recommends several preventive measures. Tourists should avoid openly displaying valuables such as jewelry, phones, and laptops, especially when using public transport. Additionally, utilizing luggage storage services is advised to keep valuable personal belongings safe instead of carrying them throughout the city.
Hotspots for Theft in Top Cities
In Paris, the areas around the Eiffel Tower and the Montmartre district have been identified as the primary hotspots for tourist thefts. Common scams in the French capital include the “friendship bracelet” scam, fake charity requests, and distraction thefts like the “dropped ring” trick.
Rome’s historic city center and its often-congested public transport system are where most thefts occur. Tourists visiting the Italian capital are urged to exercise extreme caution with their belongings.
Barcelona’s notorious reputation for tourist insecurity is further cemented by its third-place ranking. The city experiences a high incidence of pickpocketing, various scams (such as inflated prices, deceptive tours, and currency exchange tricks), and muggings. The Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and Las Ramblas are the three locations with the highest reported incidents.
Other Cities in the Ranking
Following Paris, Rome, and Barcelona, the list continues with Bangkok (Thailand), Orlando (USA), Istanbul (Turkey), New York (USA), Milan (Italy), Las Vegas (USA), and Delhi (India).
Safest Cities for Tourists
Conversely, Radical Storage also identified the ten cities with the highest sense of security for tourists. These include Warsaw (Poland), Nice (France), Zurich (Switzerland), Heraklion (Greece), Mugla (Turkey), Lima (Peru), Santiago de Chile (Chile), Shanghai (China), Doha (Qatar), and Hanoi (Vietnam).
“In all these cities, only 0.1% of reviews mention thefts and other security issues. These are destinations where, although travelers should still be attentive, in general they can be more relaxed, feel safer, and usually encounter fewer problems,” concluded Seina.
