Barcelona Beaches Open for Bathing Season: Your Essential Guide
Barcelona’s beaches have officially commenced their medium bathing season, providing residents and visitors with a comprehensive array of services. This year’s opening follows crucial sand replenishment efforts to restore the coastline after the impact of January’s Storm Harry.
Sand Replenishment Efforts After Storm Harry
Before the season’s start, extensive sand movements were necessary to rebalance the coastal profile. Storm Harry caused a severe loss of sediment, with the coastline receding between 3 and 10 meters across all beaches. Specifically, 4,000 m³ of sand was transferred from Sant Miquel beach and 2,000 m³ from Somorrostro beach to Barceloneta beach. These efforts align with the objectives of the Pla Clima, focusing on sand contribution and distribution to preserve the coastal area against sea storms and rising sea levels.
Lifeguard and Rescue Services
The Lifeguard and Rescue Service is now active, responsible for surveillance, prevention, and assistance to bathers. The initial deployment includes 13 watchtowers and 33 operational lifeguards. This will expand to 22 towers and 54 personnel during the high season (May 30 to September 13). Operating hours are from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM during the medium season, extending to 7:30 PM in high season.
Accessibility for All: Bathing Support Service
The Bathing Support Service offers personal and technical assistance to people with reduced mobility, facilitating their access to the water. During the medium season, the service at Nova Icària beach is operational from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM. The four usual service points are located at the Fòrum bathing area, Bogatell, Nova Icària, and Barceloneta.
Public Restrooms and Chiringuitos
All public restrooms at Espigó del Gas, Somorrostro, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Llevant, and Fòrum are open from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM during the medium bathing season. Additionally, chiringuito restrooms are publicly accessible throughout the entire season.
Beaches will feature the usual chiringuito, sun lounger, and umbrella services under a new contract (2026-2029) that prioritizes quality, sustainability, and social responsibility. This new phase focuses on an improved gastronomic offer and renovated restroom facilities. The zero-waste strategy continues with the use of reusable cups at all chiringuitos, a key measure to reduce waste with citizen cooperation. Four chiringuitos are expected to be operational at the start of the season: one at Sant Sebastià, one at Sant Miquel, and two at Bogatell. The remaining will open progressively.
Enhanced Cleaning Services
The sand cleaning service has been reinforced to accommodate the increase in bathers and the activation of coastal services. While the service operates year-round, it is now intensified with teams working in three shifts (morning, afternoon, and night) to perform manual sweeping, sand sifting, and waste bin emptying.
Citizen Information and Environmental Education
This year, the citizen information service will focus on regulating sports uses, the use of boat entry and exit channels, promoting smoke-free beaches, and raising awareness about preventing gender-based violence and good practices for waste reduction. For the medium season, a team of 11 people is planned, and information points will be open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The Beach Centre, a leading environmental education facility focusing on the marine and coastal environment, will operate from April 7 to October 31. Located on Somorrostro beach, it offers a program of free activities from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Reinforced Security
The Guardia Urbana (Local Police) is increasing its presence in the beach areas to ensure safety and prevention along the coast, preserving public spaces as areas of coexistence.
Smoke-Free Beaches
Since summer 2022, Barcelona’s beaches have been smoke-free. This regulation prohibits tobacco consumption on all beaches, including the Fòrum bathing area.
