Literary Phone Booths Take Over Madrid Streets: Free Access to Lorca or Emily Dickinson
Madrid, April 26 – The streets of Madrid have been transformed by a unique cultural initiative, with the installation of literary phone booths offering free access to some of the greatest works of Spanish and international literature. Passers-by can now pick up a phone in a London-style booth and listen to excerpts from literary masterpieces.
The project, which is part of the participatory initiative ‘En los márgenes: Festival Teatro a Pie de Barrio’ (On the Margins: Neighborhood Theater Festival), is integrated into the broader ’21distritos’ festival. This cultural endeavor aims to bring theater and literature closer to the city’s peripheral districts, following its successful run in Tetuán and Usera, and preparing for its return to Puente de Vallecas in May.
A Sensory Experience: Rediscovering Literature
Titled ‘Cabinas literarias’ (Literary Phone Booths), the installation offers a free sensory experience that invites the public to rediscover literature from an intimate and innovative perspective. According to the Madrid City Council’s portal, it’s “as if the words of poets and writers were whispered just for you.”
Upon lifting the receiver, the public can enjoy fragments from works such as ‘El Quijote,’ an entry from María Moliner’s dictionary, children’s classics by Gloria Fuertes, or an ode to love by Federico García Lorca, the immortal poet and symbol of the struggle for freedom and justice of the Generation of ’27.
International Authors and Final Dates
Beyond Spanish authors, the initiative also includes texts in English by William Shakespeare and the works of Emily Dickinson, a pivotal figure in modern poetry whose insights into nature and intimacy are captured in nearly 1,800 compositions.
The literary installation will have its final engagement on Saturday, May 23, at 6:00 PM, at Bulevar Peña Gorbea in Puente de Vallecas. This event will mark the culmination of a journey that began on March 22 in the same district, bringing written word outside its traditional spaces.
Accessibility and Community Engagement
Integrated into the Puente de Vallecas Book Fair, the proposal is designed to be accessible, including for people with reduced mobility. As with all outdoor events, its execution is subject to weather conditions. With an approximate duration of three hours and recommended for ages 10 and up, this sound piece encourages a leisurely and close listening experience of contemporary literature. Admission is free until full capacity, reflecting a commitment to democratizing access to literary creation within the urban space itself.
The initiative has been met with positive feedback, highlighting the importance of bringing cultural events directly to communities and making them easily accessible to a wide audience.
