Barcelona: A Silent Battleground in a Global Mafia War

Over the past nine months, Barcelona has unwittingly become a primary stage for a brutal international conflict between two Montenegrin mafia clans: Kavac and Skaljari. This escalating feud, which has already claimed 80 lives worldwide according to Sasa Djordjevic, a senior analyst at Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, has now seen four targeted attacks in the Catalan capital, resulting in three fatalities and one attempted murder.

The executions carried out in Catalonia bear the hallmarks of professional precision. Armed men approach their targets discreetly, firing at close range to ensure a kill, and then disappear without leaving a single fingerprint or DNA trace. Despite the gravity of these crimes, the Mossos d’Esquadra have yet to apprehend any of the perpetrators. Investigators suspect these are contract killers, or clan members, who enter and exit Spain by road, specifically for these assassinations.

Solving these cases, currently under judicial secrecy in Catalan courts, presents a formidable challenge. Success, it seems, will largely depend on the cooperation of international police forces providing crucial intelligence.

The Bloody Timeline: Four Strikes in Nine Months

The first violent episode in Barcelona’s chapter of this Montenegrin clan war unfolded in July 2025. Filipu Knezevic, a 36-year-old hitman allegedly associated with the Kavac clan, was gunned down on Consell de Cent street. Police found eight shell casings, four of which struck Knezevic – three in the torso and one in the head. The assassin lay in wait, concealed within a building entrance. Knezevic himself was a suspect in the 2020 murders of two rival mafiosi on the Greek island of Corfu.

Just days later, on August 2, 2025, Predrag Vujosevic, known as ‘Marko,’ a member of the Skaljari clan and part of the international jewel thief network ‘Pink Panthers,’ was shot while walking his dog on Urgell street. Miraculously, he survived. Vujosevic was serving a sentence in Barcelona but enjoyed a degree of freedom, being in a third-degree prison regime. He only returned to prison from Monday to Friday at an open center in La Trinitat, serving time for drug trafficking in the Canary Islands in 2021, where he was arrested for attempting to distribute 408 kilograms of cocaine.

The second fatal victim was Milan Milic, also believed to be a member of the Skaljari clan. He was assassinated on December 22, 2025, in Castelldefels, a town near Barcelona. The hitman fired four shots at point-blank range and vanished. The Mossos were unable to locate him.

The most recent chapter occurred just two weeks ago, on April 14, 2026. Around 4 PM, two men dressed in black opened fire on Krsto Vujic, alias ‘Terminator.’ Vujic was enjoying a drink on a terrace bar on Passeig de Taulat, near Diagonal Mar in the Poblenou neighborhood, accompanied by a woman and a small child. Vujic was admitted to a Barcelona hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries a week later. Krsto “Terminator” Vujic was also affiliated with the Skaljari clan.

The Modus Operandi: Professionalism and Evasion

The consistent pattern across these incidents points to a highly professional and elusive network of assassins. The lack of forensic evidence and the swift, untraceable departures suggest a well-oiled machine designed to eliminate targets and disappear. The use of road travel for entry and exit further complicates tracking, allowing the perpetrators to blend into the vast European road network.

The implications for Barcelona are significant. Once a vibrant tourist destination, it now finds itself entangled in a shadowy underworld conflict, raising concerns about public safety and the ability of local law enforcement to counter such sophisticated criminal operations. The ongoing investigations, shrouded in secrecy, highlight the complex nature of transnational organized crime and the challenges faced by authorities in bringing these elusive killers to justice.

As the body count rises and the hitmen continue to evade capture, the question remains: how long will Barcelona remain a hunting ground for these ruthless Montenegrin clans, and what measures will be taken to dismantle their deadly presence?
