Barcelona, April 30 – A demonstration in Barcelona protesting the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israel in international waters ended with objects being thrown at the police line protecting the Israeli Consulate on Avenida de Carlos III, followed by charges from the Mossos d’Esquadra.
Clashes and Police Intervention
A group of masked individuals threw objects, primarily bottles, pyrotechnics, and smoke bombs, at the riot police stationed on Gandesa Street at Avenida Diagonal. Demonstrators also overturned about a dozen containers before police charges ensued.
The incidents occurred after approximately 400 people participated in a march that began shortly after 8:00 PM from Plaza de Sants and proceeded towards the consulate, located on Gran Vía de Carlos III, near Avenida Diagonal. The Mossos d’Esquadra prevented them from approaching, forming a police cordon.
Protesters’ Slogans and Demands
Among the chants heard from the demonstrators were slogans such as ‘Boycott Israel’, ‘Israel is not a country, it’s an occupation’, ‘Flotilla, you are not alone’, and ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will advance’.
Israel had detained around 175 activists, including thirty Spaniards, who were aboard 22 of the 58 vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla intercepted in international waters south of Greece, approximately a thousand kilometers from the coasts of the Gaza Strip and Israel.
