Madrid, May 1, 2026 – The Spanish capital and its surrounding areas are set to host a diverse array of free cultural events from May 1st to May 8th, 2026. The agenda includes a Roman festival, a national folklore gathering, and celebrations of the Portuguese language, promising a rich cultural experience for residents and visitors alike.

Alcalá de Henares Travels Back to Roman Times with Complutum Renacida

The municipality of Alcalá de Henares, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is once again hosting its traditional Complutum Renacida festival. This event recreates daily Roman life through a program of educational activities, historical reenactments, technical visits, monologues, workshops, and special proposals in various locations.

While some activities, such as the Gran Circus Maximus, require payment, the festival also offers free immersive experiences. A prominent free event is the parade that transports visitors to the atmosphere of ancient Rome.

First National Folklore Meeting Celebrates Spanish Traditions

As part of the Fiestas del 2 de Mayo, the Asociación Protección Danza Flamenco y Folclore is presenting the First National Folklore Meeting in Madrid. This event showcases the cultural richness and diversity of Spanish traditions, featuring groups from various communities:

  • Coros y Danzas Mazantini (Castilla-La Mancha)
  • Grupo de Danzas San Rafael-Alcaria (Andalucía)

All performances are scheduled for Sunday, May 3, at the Puente del Rey esplanade. Admission is free until full capacity is reached, so early arrival is recommended.

Celebrating the Portuguese Language at Casa de América

With over 260 million speakers worldwide, Portuguese is not only a language but also the voice of diverse cultures. Casa de América, the Embassy of Portugal in Spain, and the Instituto Camões are organizing an event to celebrate World Portuguese Language Day. The celebration will focus on a triangular relationship between Portugal, Mozambique, and Brazil.

The event will feature Portuguese writer Dulce Maria Cardoso and Mozambican poet, playwright, and essayist Luís Carlos Patraquim. Music will complement the session with a performance by Sol Homar Osimani.

17th-Century Sounds at Fundación Juan March

The Fundación Juan March continues its tradition of classical music with a 60-minute performance by Deliciæ Ensemble. They will interpret adoration motets from the early 17th century, including works by Italian composers Girolamo Frescobaldi, Adriano Banchieri, and Claudio Monteverdi.

Founded in 2024, Deliciæ Ensemble specializes in the interpretation of early Renaissance and Baroque music from Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. Under the artistic direction of sackbut player Ramon Marquès, the ensemble will perform on Sunday, May 3, with free admission until full capacity is reached.

A Talk on Forest Fires at Ateneo de Madrid

Journalist Juan Navarro, author of ‘Los rescoldos de la culebra’ (Libros del K.O., 2024), will join firefighter Nacho Martín, founder of the NGO SOS Wildfire, for a discussion titled “Forest fires are prevented and managed: how if your town is threatened.” This talk is part of the ‘Forest Fires’ cycle at the Ateneo de Madrid.

The discussion will draw on Martín’s field experience and Navarro’s book, which chronicles the devastating fires in Zamora in 2022. The aim is to inform attendees about prevention and management strategies for forest fires, especially crucial with summer approaching.

A Stroll Through the Rose Garden of Parque del Oeste

The Parque del Oeste, a jewel of Madrid, offers not only a privileged spot for sunset views by the Temple of Debod but also the stunning Ramón Ortiz Rose Garden. Established in 1955, this rose garden was recognized in 2006 with the Award of Garden Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies.

Located on a flat terrace within the park, the rose garden features a rectangular and symmetrical design, perfectly organized to display over 650 different varieties, totaling approximately 20,000 rose bushes.
