Barcelona Reaffirms Its Position as a Premier Business Tourism Destination
Barcelona, Spain – May 19, 2026 – Barcelona has maintained its status as a leading destination for business tourism, securing the third position in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) 2025 classification. This achievement marks 25 consecutive years of the city ranking among the top five global destinations for congresses, conventions, and fairs.
Approximately 20% of the 16 million tourists visiting Barcelona annually are business travelers. This figure rises to 25% outside the summer season, highlighting the significant role of business tourism in the city’s economy. Unlike other sectors, business tourism enjoys widespread consensus in Barcelona.
Global Recognition and Specialization
The latest ICCA rankings, released this Tuesday, placed Barcelona third in the number of events hosted, trailing only Lisbon and Paris. Vienna secured fourth place, followed by Singapore in fifth, while Madrid ranked 13th.
Barcelona excels in specific thematic areas, holding the top spot for scientific congresses, second for medical conclaves (after Vienna), and fourth for technological encounters. The city is actively pursuing public and private investments to further strengthen its position.
Major Investments in Exhibition Facilities
Key investments are underway at Fira de Barcelona’s two exhibition venues. The Gran Via venue is undergoing expansion with a new pavilion exceeding 60,000 square meters, designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito and Barcelona-based studio B720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos. This expansion, expected to be completed in 2027, will increase the exhibition space to 300,000 square meters.
The historic Montjuïc venue will be transformed to include residential areas, green spaces, and a new congress palace. Two of its former pavilions will be converted into an innovation center and an extension of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC). The first phase of this transformation is scheduled for completion in 2029.
Private Sector Contributions and Economic Impact
Private projects are also contributing to Barcelona’s appeal, such as the conversion of the former Cine Diagonal into Espai Diagonal, a new venue for events and conferences, set to open this Thursday. According to the Barcelona Convention Bureau (BCB), at least 165 events are scheduled until 2029, with many more under confidentiality clauses.
Jordi Clos, president of Turisme de Barcelona’s executive committee and a hotel entrepreneur, emphasizes the strategic importance of business tourism. “It represents a qualified visitor with an average stay of four nights who rates the city very highly, leading to over 70% repeat visits,” Clos stated.
In 2025, Barcelona hosted 1,992 events, a 1.2% increase from the previous year. These events attracted over 680,000 delegates and generated a direct economic impact exceeding 1.24 billion euros.
The city has specialized in various event types, from large-scale international congresses like the Mobile World Congress (MWC) and Alimentaria (which each attracted over 100,000 attendees in their latest editions this year) to smaller conventions and incentive trips. Notably, one in four of these smaller events takes place outside the city center, within the province of Barcelona.
Future Outlook and Continued Growth
Barcelona’s sustained leadership in business tourism underscores its robust infrastructure, strategic investments, and diverse offerings. With ongoing expansions and a strong commitment from both public and private sectors, the city is poised to further solidify its reputation as a premier global destination for international events and conferences.
