ONCE Commemorative Coupon Celebrates 75th Anniversary of El Pardo and Fuencarral Annexation to Madrid

Madrid, May 26, 2026 – The councilor for the Fuencarral-El Pardo district, José Antonio Martínez Páramo, presented a commemorative ONCE coupon this morning at the Valverde Sociocultural Center. This special coupon marks the 75th anniversary of the annexation of El Pardo and Fuencarral to Madrid and will be available for purchase starting today, Tuesday, May 26.

Martínez Páramo emphasized that, during this historical event, “the municipality of Madrid knew how to respect the identity of both towns, enriching itself in turn with their cultural, urban, and natural heritage.”

A Look Back at the Annexation Process

The incorporation of both populations was part of Madrid’s significant administrative expansion process in the mid-20th century. The decree approving the total annexation of the municipal territory of El Pardo is dated August 10, 1950, and was published in the Official State Gazette on December 13 of the same year. The last session of the El Pardo City Council, formalizing its integration into the capital of Spain, took place on March 27, 1951.

Meanwhile, the Fuencarral City Council was annexed to Madrid by a Decree from the Ministry of Governance on November 10, 1950, with the formalization occurring on October 20, 1951. Subsequently, the administrative reorganization of Madrid integrated both territories into the same district in 1971. The definitive name of Fuencarral-El Pardo was consolidated in 1987.

Significance of the Commemoration

The issuance of this ONCE coupon serves as a public recognition of the historical significance of these annexations, which played a crucial role in shaping the modern-day city of Madrid. It highlights the respectful integration of distinct local identities into the broader municipal structure, fostering a richer and more diverse urban landscape.

The event underscores the city’s commitment to preserving its historical memory and acknowledging the contributions of its constituent parts. The commemorative coupon not only celebrates a historical milestone but also raises awareness among the public about the evolution of Madrid’s administrative boundaries and its rich heritage.

The Role of ONCE in Commemorations

ONCE (Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles), the Spanish National Organization of the Blind, frequently issues special edition coupons to commemorate significant national and local events, historical figures, and cultural milestones. These coupons serve as a popular means of celebrating heritage while also supporting the organization’s social work.

The choice to feature the 75th anniversary of the El Pardo and Fuencarral annexations on an ONCE coupon reflects the importance placed on these events within the community. It provides a tangible and widely accessible way for citizens to engage with their local history.

The presentation of the coupon by Councilor Martínez Páramo at the Valverde Sociocultural Center further emphasizes the community-focused nature of this commemoration, bringing the historical event directly to the residents of the district.
