Madrid, May 28 – The Madrid City Council has announced a significant investment of 445,000 euros, with potential for an additional 440,000 euros, to invigorate local commerce. This public subsidy call for 2026, managed by the Department of Economy, Innovation, and Finance, focuses on boosting entrepreneurship in municipal markets and modernizing the city’s newsstands.
Key Objectives of the Initiative
The primary goals of this financial injection are to enhance the occupancy rates of municipal markets, attract public interest activities, and continue the aesthetic and functional upgrade of newsstands. Engracia Hidalgo, Delegate for Economy, Innovation, and Finance, emphasized that this call “responds to the municipal commitment to protect and promote public markets as backbone elements of neighborhood life and engines of the local economy.”
Support for Market Entrepreneurship (Line 1)
A major innovation for this year is introduced in Line 1, which aims to incentivize entrepreneurship in market stalls by subsidizing their fees for up to 24 months. To prevent the closure of traditional businesses, the aid will be increased by 10% when the application is motivated by generational handover due to the retirement of the previous owner.
Furthermore, to address low occupancy in some markets, the requirement for premises to be smaller than 500 square meters has been removed. This change allows larger projects to enter, which can qualify for a maximum monthly subsidy of 1,500 euros.
Subsidizable fee percentages have also been significantly increased for commercial and hospitality premises in the Bami and Pacífico markets, equating them to others with similar occupancy rates, with the aim of revitalizing activity in these facilities.
Public Interest Activities and Training (Line 2)
Line 2 continues to support the establishment of public interest activities in municipal market premises, such as libraries or specialized training centers for commerce and hospitality. The duration of this support is limited to a maximum of 24 months.
Modernization of Newsstands (Line 3)
Line 3 is dedicated to the improvement, modernization, or replacement of newsstands, with a limit of 30,000 euros per newsstand. In the case of newsstand replacement, the limit is 18,000 euros. Following a recent technical modification to the bases to more clearly define the scope of action, the replacement of both approved and individualized newsstands with others in proper condition will be subsidized.
Application Deadlines and Processing
The subsidies will be managed as post-payable grants and will be disbursed in a single payment once the concession is resolved, charged to the 2026 budget. The application period for Lines 1 and 2, which pertain to municipal markets, runs from May 15 to June 15. For Line 3, relating to newsstands, the application period will be open from June 15 to September 30.
This economic injection, which surpasses the total amount granted in the previous year (267,500 euros), reinforces the City Council’s public-private collaboration strategy to ensure the competitiveness and future of proximity commerce in Madrid.
