FIA Delegation Assesses Progress of MadRing Circuit Ahead of Inaugural Spanish Grand Prix

Madrid, June 1st, 2026 – The countdown to the return of Formula 1 to Madrid, on the new urban circuit of MadRing, has officially begun. With the first edition of the Spanish Grand Prix on its new stage scheduled for the weekend of September 11-13, the circuit is rapidly taking shape as the date approaches and construction progresses.

This Monday, just over three months before the event, a delegation from the FIA, led by Rui Marques and Jorge Abed, conducted an inspection. They toured the various points of the future MadRing aboard a bus, while the Grand Prix promoters provided detailed updates since their last visit.

Significant Milestones in Circuit Construction

Two months ago, the circuit achieved a significant milestone with the initial asphalt laying of the complex at banked turn 12, known as ‘La Monumental’. This section is widely anticipated to be the most spectacular part of the Madrid track. Despite the elevated prices, tickets for the event are reportedly selling at a rapid pace.

While some sources have raised concerns about whether the circuit will be completed on schedule and in time for the Spanish Grand Prix, Luis García Abad, a key figure in the project, dismisses these fears. “We are progressing at a good pace, exactly as planned, and we will be ready to host a test event before the Grand Prix and carry out all final checks with Formula 1 and the FIA before the September race,” Abad stated, reassuring stakeholders.

Long-Term Commitment to Formula 1

Construction on the MadRing circuit began just over a year ago, generating considerable excitement. The city of Madrid has secured a 10-year contract with Formula 1, marking a significant commitment to the sport. Meanwhile, the Circuit de Barcelona, which will host the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix this June, is set to alternate biennially with Spa-Francorchamps starting next season, highlighting a shift in the Spanish Grand Prix landscape.

This development underscores Madrid’s ambition to establish itself as a premier destination for international sporting events, with the new MadRing circuit poised to become a prominent feature on the Formula 1 calendar for the next decade.
