Madrid, June 1, 2026 – The Community of Madrid has announced its plan to digitize an unprecedented photographic archive of the renowned writer and Nobel Prize winner Vicente Aleixandre. The collection, comprising nearly 500 images, was discovered in an old leather suitcase and is set to be preserved and made accessible to the public.
Preserving a Nobel Laureate’s Legacy
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the regional government to recover and highlight the cultural legacy of Velintonia, Aleixandre’s historic residence. Velintonia served as a crucial meeting point for several generations of writers who followed the Generation of ’27, a prominent group of Spanish poets and intellectuals.
The newly discovered photographs, unearthed by the Association of Friends of Vicente Aleixandre (AAVA), date back to the early decades of the 20th century. They capture the writer’s youth and include portraits of Vicente Aleixandre alongside his parents and sister, Conchita. Significantly, the collection also features images of Aleixandre with other distinguished figures from the Generation of ’27, most notably the playwright Federico García Lorca.
Unique Stereoscopic Images Among the Finds
Adding to the intrigue, several stereoscopic photographs were also found within the collection. This historical technique uses two slightly different images to create a unified, three-dimensional effect when viewed through a special device, offering a unique glimpse into the past.
Velintonia Declared a Cultural Heritage Site
The digitization project follows the recent declaration of Velintonia as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the category of Intangible Heritage. This recognition, approved by the Governing Council of the Community of Madrid on May 13, underscores the cultural and symbolic value of the residence, which was fundamental to the development and dissemination of contemporary Spanish culture.
A Commitment to Cultural Preservation
The Community of Madrid’s commitment to preserving Aleixandre’s legacy is further exemplified by this digitization effort. By making these previously unseen images available, the government aims to enrich the understanding of one of Spain’s most important literary figures and the vibrant cultural era he inhabited.
This project ensures that future generations will have access to a more complete visual record of Vicente Aleixandre’s life and his connections with the intellectual and artistic movements of his time, reinforcing Madrid’s role as a guardian of Spanish cultural heritage.
