South Summit 2026: Madrid Solidifies its Position as a Global Innovation and AI Hub
Madrid, June 4, 2026 – South Summit 2026, the premier entrepreneurship and innovation event in Southern Europe, has commenced in Madrid, drawing over 20,000 attendees from across the globe. King Felipe VI and Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida visited the event today at La Nave in Villaverde, underscoring its significance for the city’s technological and economic landscape.
The Madrid City Council has renewed its collaboration with South Summit this year, contributing 800,000 euros to co-organize the event. This partnership aims to strengthen Madrid’s position as a leading hub for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Economic Impact and Global Reach
The 15th edition of South Summit, running from June 3-5, is anticipated to generate an economic impact of nearly 42 million euros for Madrid, a 10% increase from 2025. Each visitor is expected to contribute over 2,000 euros to the local economy. The event also boasts a record global participation, with 56% of attendees coming from outside Madrid, solidifying its status as a key forum for the European entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Over 20,000 people are expected to pass through La Nave during the three-day event, which brings together entrepreneurs, investors, corporations, institutions, and technology leaders from around the world. The event is also projected to create 3,798 direct and indirect jobs.
Madrid’s Thriving Tech Ecosystem
The City Council, through Madrid Innovation, operates a dedicated stand at South Summit, providing a platform for 104 startups from the Madrid Innovation, Madrid in Game, and Madrid Emprende ecosystems. These startups will have the opportunity to forge strategic connections with investors, other entrepreneurs, and institutions, showcasing Madrid’s talent and innovative projects.
This year’s South Summit coincides with Madrid’s growing prominence in the national and international technology scene. According to Scoutyn’s 2026 National Report on Tech and Innovative Companies, Madrid is home to 1,801 technology companies, employing over 30,700 people and generating nearly 5 billion euros in annual revenue, making it the city with the most technology companies in Spain.
Artificial Intelligence at the Forefront
A strategic vertical dedicated to artificial intelligence, themed ‘AI Convergence,’ is a new addition to this 15th edition. The event serves as a major forum for AI, exploring how this technology is reshaping business development, capital allocation, and the scaling of new business models. The program features more than 600 international speakers, including founders, investors, company creators, corporations, and institutions, along with nearly 30 unicorn companies.
The Madrid City Council is actively promoting its commitment to artificial intelligence through various initiatives. Ángel Niño, the Councillor for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will detail ‘DesafIA Madrid,’ an open innovation program designed to identify technological solutions for real challenges faced by companies and institutions. This program exemplifies public-private collaboration, leveraging startup talent to develop technological solutions and demonstrating the practical applications of AI for citizens, generating public, economic, and social value through technology.
International Program and Startup Competition
Among the highlights of the program is the ‘Startup Competition,’ recognized as one of the most significant entrepreneurship competitions globally. The 2026 edition has achieved a record number of global participants, with startups from 26 countries among the 100 finalists. These companies were selected from over 4,500 applications worldwide, highlighting an increasingly global, diverse, and interconnected entrepreneurial ecosystem, as well as the growing international appeal of the competition.
The strategic alliance with South Summit reaffirms the City Council’s ongoing commitment to consolidating Madrid as a venue for major innovation events that have a direct impact on the local economy and strengthen Madrid’s international standing.
