Cordoba, February 13 – The A-4 highway, a vital artery connecting Cordoba to Madrid, experienced significant disruption last night after a lorry overturned, completely blocking traffic in the Madrid-bound direction. The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:23 PM on Wednesday, February 12, led to the immediate activation of emergency protocols by the Civil Guard.
Highway A-4 Blocked Following Lorry Accident
The accident took place at kilometre 386.2 of the A-4, specifically near Los Cansinos, with the affected stretch extending to kilometre 391.4. According to reports from the Civil Guard, the lorry came to rest across both lanes of the highway, making passage impossible and necessitating a full closure of the road towards the capital.
Emergency services, including medical personnel, Civil Guard Traffic agents, and Road Maintenance crews, were swiftly dispatched to the scene. Fortunately, initial reports confirm that no injuries were sustained in the incident, a detail highlighted by the Civil Guard.
Diversions in Place for Madrid-Bound Traffic
To alleviate the traffic congestion and ensure the flow of vehicles, the Civil Guard has implemented alternative diversion routes. Motorists travelling towards Madrid are being redirected at the provincial prison of Alcolea, onto the old N-IV road. Drivers are advised to follow these alternative routes and exercise caution.
The overturned lorry, reportedly carrying tomatoes, has caused severe traffic retentions. The focus of the ongoing operation is the safe removal of the vehicle and the subsequent clearing of the highway to restore normal traffic conditions. The duration of the closure remains uncertain as recovery efforts continue.
Concerns Over Road Conditions in the Region
This incident comes amidst growing concerns regarding the state of roads between Cordoba and Seville. Recent warnings have highlighted an increase in vehicle tyre blowouts, suggesting potential issues with road surfaces that could contribute to such accidents.
Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and to check road conditions before embarking on journeys, especially during night-time hours when visibility may be reduced. The Civil Guard and other relevant agencies are working diligently to manage the current situation and ensure public safety on the roads.
Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves and the highway is cleared for traffic.
