Ark Data Centres to Invest Over 600 Million Euros in New Barcelona Data Center
Barcelona, March 18, 2026 – The digital infrastructure landscape in Southern Europe is set to gain a significant boost with the formal entry of Ark Data Centres into the Spanish market. The British company has acquired 30,000 square meters of industrial land near La Maquinista in Barcelona, with a total investment projected to exceed 600 million euros. Cushman & Wakefield advised on the acquisition.
Strategic Location and High-Capacity Design
The planned urban data center will feature a substantial 45 MW IT capacity, designed to meet the escalating demand for low-latency services and artificial intelligence. This infrastructure is a key component of the Besòs area’s transformation plan, linking with innovation hubs such as Les Tres Xemeneies and other digital economy initiatives in the Catalan capital.
Significant Economic and Employment Impact
Ark’s arrival is expected to have a direct and positive impact on the local job market. During the construction phase, the company anticipates generating approximately 350 annual jobs in engineering and civil works. Once operational, the data center will require a permanent staff of 150 highly qualified professionals, including electrical and IT engineers, as well as security and logistics personnel.
To facilitate the project’s smooth integration, the Generalitat de Catalunya, through ACCIÓ, and the Barcelona City Council will collaborate with Ark Data Centres. This support will include identifying local suppliers and integrating the facility into the city’s business ecosystem.
Commitment to “Digital Sovereignty”
Huw Owen, CEO of Ark Data Centres, emphasized Barcelona’s strategic importance for critical infrastructure deployment. “There is a growing demand for latency-sensitive urban infrastructure,” Owen stated, highlighting that this center will support “sovereign computing” and high-performance workloads that require physical proximity to large population centers.
Oriol Barrachina, CEO of Cushman & Wakefield in Spain, described the operation as a “turning point” for Barcelona. According to Barrachina, this move not only strengthens Barcelona’s position against its European competitors but also significantly enhances its capacity to attract new technological investment projects with substantial economic impact.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at the Forefront
Given the project’s scale, energy supply will be a critical element. Ark is already working with local operators to finance and facilitate necessary improvements to the electrical grid. Furthermore, the company has indicated that the final design of the cooling system will be determined during the detailed engineering phase, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and responsible water management – a crucial consideration for such industrial developments.
This investment underscores Barcelona’s growing appeal as a hub for digital innovation and critical infrastructure in Europe.
