Barcelona Allocates €1.7 Million for New Community Center in Barceloneta
Barcelona, April 18, 2026 – The Ciutat Vella District of Barcelona will allocate 1.7 million euros for the renovation of a new community center in Barceloneta, as announced by the City Council. The new space, located at number 44 Passeig Joan de Borbó, will span over 500 square meters, distributed across various multipurpose rooms, workshops, offices, storage, and services.
Project Details and Timeline
The facility will occupy three floors of a building that was recently rehabilitated to house 18 units of official protected housing, which have already been delivered to their occupants. The renovation will commence with the demolition of floor slabs to restore the double height of the ground floor and adapt the layout to its new uses. This includes the installation of new partitions, false ceilings, flooring, and finishes. The facade’s carpentry will also be renewed to enhance the building’s energy efficiency.
The ground floor will feature a common area, an open workshop, and a multipurpose room. The basement will house a storage area and the facilities room, while the mezzanine floor will accommodate two additional rooms. The renovation will also include improvements in thermal and acoustic insulation, the renewal and implementation of new installations, and adaptations to meet new uses and needs, ensuring optimal energy efficiency. The works are projected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
Llar Barceloneta: A Comprehensive Social Project
This local space is part of a broader project known as Llar Barceloneta, which involved the comprehensive rehabilitation of the property to create 18 social and affordable rental housing units. Some of these units are specifically designated for neighborhood residents who utilize social services. The City Council ceded the building to the Salas Foundation and the Hàbitat3 Foundation, which formed a joint venture (UTE) and undertook the comprehensive rehabilitation with the aid of a municipal subsidy.
The 18 apartments were delivered on March 28, 2026, comprising 12 affordable rental units, one for a resident who already lived in the block and had the right of return after the works, and five units allocated to social entities.
Impact on the Community
This investment underscores Barcelona’s commitment to strengthening its social infrastructure and providing essential spaces for community engagement and development. The new center is expected to serve as a vital hub for local entities, fostering collaboration and offering a range of activities and services to Barceloneta residents. The project reflects a strategic approach to urban development that integrates social housing with community facilities, aiming to enhance the quality of life for residents and promote a more cohesive neighborhood.
The initiative is a significant step towards revitalizing the Barceloneta area, providing much-needed resources for local organizations and ensuring that the community has access to modern, well-equipped facilities. The focus on energy efficiency and sustainable design also highlights the city’s dedication to environmental responsibility in its urban planning projects.
