Barcelona, April 23, 2026 – Barcelona is once again at the epicentre of the global fishing industry, hosting the 32nd edition of Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global. This year’s event has broken all previous records, occupying over 52,950 square meters of exhibition space at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue. With more than 2,300 companies from 86 countries participating, the fair solidifies its position as the leading platform for innovation and business across the entire seafood supply chain.

Record-Breaking Edition and Economic Impact

The event is projected to generate an economic benefit exceeding 161 million euros for the city. This edition features new national pavilions from countries such as Bulgaria, Mexico, Oman, Uruguay, and Venezuela. A notable highlight is the debut of the Aquaculture Innovation Zone, a dedicated space for cutting-edge technological solutions in animal health and sustainable feed. Additionally, the conference program boasts over 90 international experts, with economist Dr. Nomi Prins delivering the inaugural address.

Norwegian Minister of Fisheries Visits Mercat de Sants

Coinciding with the fair, the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næs, visited the Mercat de Sants. The purpose of her visit was to gain a closer understanding of the commercial model of Barcelona’s municipal markets and the distribution of fresh produce.

The Minister was accompanied by a delegation that included the Norwegian Ambassador to Spain, Lars Andersen; the Honorary Consul of Norway in Barcelona, Anders Braekken; the Director General of the Norwegian Department of Fisheries, Elisabeth Nordgård Gabrielsen; the Director General of the Norwegian Department of Commercial Policy, Astrid Holtan; the CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council, Christian Chramer; and the Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council’s Spanish office, Tore Holvik. During their visit, they engaged in discussions with market vendors, exchanging impressions on the quality and demand for fish and seafood.

Gastronomic Activities at La Boqueria

La Boqueria market has also contributed to the week’s dynamic atmosphere with specialized activities. Espai Boqueria hosted an event for Mare Ostrum, an operator, alongside their clients and suppliers, featuring a wide selection of oysters, fish, and seafood.

Furthermore, on Friday, April 24, the market will host the third edition of an oyster tasting event organized by Taste France magazine. This gastronomic proposal is designed for enthusiasts of fine produce and unique culinary experiences. The event will include demonstrations of opening French oysters, with experts showcasing the appropriate techniques for handling and preparing them. Tastings will also be conducted to further explore the flavour profile of this renowned French gastronomic product.
