Barcelona is preparing to usher in the Year of the Fire Horse 2026 with a vibrant celebration featuring a grand parade, over 40 free performances, and a cultural and gastronomic fair. The festivities, centered around the Arc de Triomf, will take place on February 7th and 8th, ahead of the official lunar calendar date of February 17th. The city will be adorned in red, gold, and traditional decorations for an entire weekend.
Grand Parade Kicks Off Celebrations
The citizen celebration will commence on Saturday, February 7th, at 11:00 AM with the traditional gong striking at l’Estació del Nord park. From there, the grand Chinese New Year parade will wind through the streets of Sardenya, Ribes, Nàpols, and Ausiàs March, traversing the Fort Pienc neighborhood-a hub for Barcelona’s Chinese community-before culminating at the Arc de Triomf, where the main spectacles will be held. Concurrently, a cultural and gastronomic fair will be open on the same promenade on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, offering traditional food stalls, workshops, and activities for all ages.
Extensive Program of Free Performances
The artistic program boasts over 40 free performances on the Arc de Triomf stage, spread across Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of February. Highlights include the Dunhuang Drum Dance by 6th Element Art, the Dragon and Lion Dance organized by the Fundació Institut Confuci de Barcelona, Sichuan Opera performed by the International Association of Story-telling, and ‘The Charm of the Tang Dynasty’ presented by the Escola Xinesa de Barcelona. There will also be martial arts demonstrations from the Institut de Wu Shu, musical performances featuring the hulusi-a traditional Chinese wind instrument-and traditional dances from guest countries like Armenia, Colombia, Peru, and India. Additionally, the Castellers de la Sagrada Família will build their human towers, a nod to Catalan culture in a multicultural exchange.
On Saturday, February 7th, the Arc de Triomf stage will host performances in two time slots: from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, featuring acts such as ‘The Grand Yongle Banquet’ by the Associació Hanfu Feiyu, the ‘Golden’ act by 6th Element Art, and Bollywood choreographies by Nataraja Dance. On Sunday, February 8th, performances will be concentrated in the morning, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with shows like ‘The Light of China’ by M Music & Art Studio and Peruvian dances such as the marinera norteña by the Chalanes de Barcelona group.
A Multicultural Fair for All
Throughout the weekend, Passeig de Lluís Companys will transform into an authentic cultural and gastronomic fair. Among the street stalls, visitors can savor handmade Chinese dumplings, traditional teas, typical Spring Festival sweets, and iconic dishes like baozi and mochi. There will also be calligraphy workshops, painting demonstrations, oriental craft stands, and interactive family activities, making the area around the Arc de Triomf a meeting point for diverse cultures.
Barcelona’s Commitment to Multiculturalism
The event is organized by entities such as Casa Àsia, the Fundació Institut Confuci de Barcelona, and the Associació Grupo Artistas Huaxing, which have made this celebration one of the most anticipated cultural events of the winter season. Each edition sees an increase in attendance and diversity, solidifying Barcelona’s position as one of the main centers for Chinese New Year celebrations in Spain. Beyond its tourist and festive appeal, the event pays homage to the Chinese community residing in the city and offers an opportunity for cultural exchange. The Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of energy, determination, and passion, arrives in the Catalan capital with a full agenda of art, tradition, and coexistence.
