Barcelona, December 15 – The Government Commission has approved the executive project for the improvement of the La Foixarda rugby field, located in the Sants-Montjuïc district. This initiative, driven by the Institut Barcelona Esports (IBE), will involve an investment of close to one million euros and is scheduled for execution between June and August 2026 by BIMSA.

Extensive Renovations for an Enhanced Sporting Experience

The renovation plans encompass several key upgrades designed to modernize the facility and provide optimal conditions for sports practice. The playing area will be expanded to 9,920 square meters, ensuring more space for athletes. A significant change will be the replacement of the current artificial turf with a state-of-the-art, organic-filled turf. This new turf will comply with European regulations restricting microplastics, highlighting Barcelona’s commitment to environmental sustainability in its sports infrastructure.

In addition to the turf replacement, the project will also include substantial improvements to the field’s technical systems. This involves upgrading the irrigation, drainage, pumping, and chlorination systems, which are crucial for maintaining the quality and longevity of the new turf. Furthermore, the existing goalposts will be renewed, and various lateral elements of the field will be improved, contributing to a safer and more functional environment for players and spectators alike.

Part of a Broader Sports Infrastructure Plan

This investment in the La Foixarda rugby field is an integral part of a larger shock plan aimed at improving and maintaining the city’s sports facilities. This comprehensive plan, agreed upon with ERC, allocates a total investment of 10 million euros across different districts of Barcelona. The goal is to ensure that all sports facilities in the city meet modern standards and cater to the needs of the local community.

David Escudé, the Sports Councilor, emphasized the importance of this project. He stated that this action will enable the modernization of a historic facility, ensuring optimal conditions for sports practice. This renovation is expected to benefit numerous local rugby clubs and athletes, providing them with a high-quality venue for training and competitions.

Commitment to Sustainable and Modern Sports Facilities

The decision to use organic-filled turf, compliant with European microplastic restrictions, underscores Barcelona’s dedication to sustainable urban development. By investing in environmentally friendly solutions, the city aims to minimize its ecological footprint while providing top-tier sports infrastructure. This approach aligns with broader municipal strategies to promote green spaces and sustainable practices throughout Barcelona.

The execution timeline, set for the summer months of June to August 2026, is strategically chosen to minimize disruption to sporting activities. By completing the works during this period, the city ensures that the field will be ready for use by the start of the subsequent rugby season, allowing for a seamless transition to the improved facility.

This renovation project at La Foixarda rugby field is a clear indication of Barcelona’s ongoing commitment to supporting sports, promoting healthy lifestyles, and enhancing its urban infrastructure with a focus on sustainability and modernity.
