Barcelona to Accelerate Electric Mobility with First Ultra-Fast Public Charging Station
Barcelona, April 2, 2026 – Barcelona is poised to take a significant leap in electric mobility with the introduction of its first ultra-fast public electric vehicle (EV) charging station. Located in the strategic area of Vall d’Hebron, at Germans Desvalls, 2, this pioneering facility is expected to be operational by late 2026. The project, driven by Endolla Barcelona and managed by BSM, marks a crucial step in reinforcing the city’s EV charging infrastructure and promoting sustainable transportation.
The new ‘electrolinera’ will boast an impressive power output of up to 480 kW, allowing EVs to gain up to 400 kilometers of autonomy in a mere 15 minutes. Spanning 900 square meters, the station will feature 12 simultaneous charging points, capable of serving more than 300 vehicles per day. This ‘stop & go’ model is designed for efficiency, enabling drivers to quickly charge and resume their journeys.
A Qualitative Leap for Sustainable Mobility
Mayor Jaume Collboni highlighted the significance of this development, stating it represents a “qualitative leap and a paradigm shift” that solidifies Barcelona’s position as a “benchmark city in charging infrastructure and sustainable mobility.” Beyond its speed and capacity, the station is committed to sustainability, operating entirely on 100% renewable energy. This is achieved through a photovoltaic canopy and an integrated battery storage system, optimizing the use of green energy.
Collboni also emphasized the broader economic benefits, noting that “this boost also means the improvement of the possibilities for the city’s industry and the metropolitan area, in the automotive plants of the Zona Franca, and for the families who work there and depend on it.” The project involves an investment exceeding 2 million euros, with construction slated to commence in the summer of 2026.
User-Centric Design and Enhanced Network
The station’s design prioritizes user comfort and convenience, offering amenities such as rest areas, Wi-Fi connectivity, vending points, accessible restrooms, and surveillance systems. Accessing the charging points will be straightforward and intuitive; users will simply scan a QR code with the SMOU application and connect the charging cable to their vehicle. The SMOU app offers monthly subscription rates of 4.20 euros per car.
This new facility will significantly strengthen Barcelona’s Endolla Barcelona network, which currently comprises over 1,041 charging points and facilitates an average of 18,000 monthly charges. The addition of this ultra-fast station aims not only to expand the network’s capacity but also to substantially reduce charging times, thereby increasing vehicle rotation.
Addressing the EV Adoption Challenge
Despite these advancements and the expanding charging infrastructure, the presence of electric cars in Catalonia remains a minority. In 2024, Catalonia surpassed 100,000 registered electrified vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles. However, the average age of cars on Catalan roads is over 14 years, according to 2024 data from the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC). Environmental labels reflect this reality, with only 8% of vehicles holding ECO or 0-emission labels.
In response to this, the new charging hub is designed to prepare the city for an anticipated surge in charging demand, encouraging more citizens to adopt electric vehicles. Mayor Collboni asserted that this station, with its enhanced power, simultaneous charging capability for multiple vehicles, and user-focused services, “will contribute to accelerating the transition towards more sustainable mobility.”
The city’s commitment to sustainable transport is evident in this significant investment, aiming to overcome existing barriers to EV adoption and solidify Barcelona’s role as a leader in urban sustainability.
