Barcelona Kicks Off Major Urban Transformation on Avenida Roma

Barcelona, June 6 – Work is set to commence next week on the ambitious transformation of Avenida Roma into a “grand promenade” that will prioritize pedestrian access and green spaces, as announced by the Barcelona City Council. This initial phase of the project focuses on the block between Viladomat and Calàbria streets, an area that has seen recent development with the Estel building (the former Telefónica headquarters) now housing offices such as AstraZeneca’s European innovation hub.

The current interventions represent the first of three planned sections for the project, which will ultimately extend to Rocafort and Entença streets. This phase carries an estimated cost of 4.4 million euros and is projected to be completed by the spring of 2027.

Project Details and Continuity with Previous Works

The scope of work for this initial section includes the expansion of the pedestrianized promenade to València Street. A significant feature will be the creation of a new square spanning 7,700 square meters. Additionally, a service lane will be added on a single platform, mirroring the existing layout in other parts of Avenida Roma. This approach ensures continuity with previous reforms initiated in 2004 between Aragó and Urgell streets, and in 2010 between Urgell and Viladomat. The project also aims to complement ongoing improvements at Sants station.

A Participatory Approach to Urban Renewal

The urbanization of this stretch of Avenida Roma is part of a “participatory reform” initiative, according to the city council. The local administration commissioned a preliminary project for this specific block (between Viladomat and Entença) and subsequently engaged in a “contrast” process with local residents, incorporating community feedback into the design.

This urban renewal project underscores Barcelona’s commitment to creating more livable and sustainable urban environments, aligning with broader city planning strategies that emphasize green infrastructure and pedestrian-friendly zones. The transformation of Avenida Roma is expected to enhance public spaces, improve air quality, and provide residents with more opportunities for recreation and social interaction in the heart of the city.

The long-term vision for Avenida Roma is to establish a cohesive and attractive urban corridor that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding neighborhoods and contributes to the overall enhancement of Barcelona’s urban fabric. The project’s phased implementation allows for careful planning and adaptation, ensuring that each stage contributes effectively to the overarching goal of a more pedestrian-centric and environmentally conscious city.

The city council has not yet released specific details regarding the subsequent phases of the project, but it is anticipated that future announcements will provide further insights into the continued development of this significant urban transformation.
