Barcelona’s Circus for Seniors: A Joyful Rebellion Against Ageism

The air crackles with an unusual energy for a Tuesday morning in Barcelona. Laughter echoes, punctuated by the soft thud of juggling balls and the rhythmic creak of a trapeze. Here, at the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, a group of individuals defying societal expectations are finding renewed youth and purpose. Joaquina, Alícia, María Luisa, and Washington, all over 60, are not just attending a class; they are part of ‘El gran circo,’ a vibrant social circus program that is redefining what it means to age.

More Than Just a Class: A Community Transformed

“We come in feeling tired, but we leave floating with joy and well-being. We can’t wait for Tuesday to come again,” exclaims 84-year-old Joaquina Sánchez, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. She is one of 30 participants in this groundbreaking initiative, which has garnered such popularity that a lengthy waiting list now exists.

The program, born out of a desire to combat unwanted loneliness and promote healthy aging, goes far beyond teaching circus skills. Cristina Rey, a nurse from the Public Health Agency of Barcelona’s Health and Neighborhoods service, explains its profound impact: “It fosters bonds, social relationships, and active participation in the neighborhood. It challenges ageism and also works with the prejudices that seniors may have about the circus. It’s not about acting like a clown. They discover that it works on a physical and emotional level.”

The Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, a renowned circus school with roots stretching back to the 1970s when locals occupied an old factory and exchanged space for circus lessons, provides the perfect backdrop for this innovative project. The historical connection to the art form imbues the classes with an authentic spirit.

Overcoming Fears, Building Strength: The Power of Circus Arts

Three professional social circus instructors guide the participants through a diverse curriculum, carefully adapted for the group. The classes incorporate four key techniques: balancing on beams or wooden planks, acrobatic human figures that mimic alphabet letters, trapeze work, and juggling with balls, scarves, or clubs. These physical exercises are seamlessly blended with elements of dance and theater, creating a holistic experience.

Núria Díaz, a social circus and training technician at Ateneu Popular 9B, elaborates on the benefits: “Balance exercises improve concentration, coordination, and body lateralization. Acrobatics enhance mobility and body awareness, strengthening joints for situations like getting up if they fall. The trapeze works on overcoming fears, as it’s initially daunting, and it gains flexibility, strength, and body control. And juggling helps with fine motor skills, patience, and collaboration.”

The participants themselves are living testaments to these benefits. Alícia Via, 84, admits, “I like the swing, but I have a lot of respect for it because my balance is fleeting.” Yet, she proudly states, “I move more lightly now, and I’m not just sitting on the sofa at home.” María Luisa Muñoz, 83, echoes this sentiment, adding with a smile, “The trapeze is the hardest for me. I don’t know if it’s because of the kilos I have. I prefer human acrobatics. I’ve gained more balance and strength because bones get stiff.”

For Joaquina Sánchez, the circus has been instrumental in her recovery. “My balance is very bad because I had breast surgery a year ago. I’ve been through chemo, and since coming here, I’ve gained strength and I’m doing wonderfully, so to speak.” Washington Castro, a fellow participant, agrees, highlighting the continued agility and muscle strength, and calling it “an opportunity” after retirement.

Beyond the Physical: Emotional Well-being and Social Connection

The impact extends far beyond the physical realm. The circus program is significantly enhancing the emotional well-being of its participants. “It changes your thoughts, and the morning flies by,” says María Luisa. Joaquina attributes her eagerness to attend to the positive atmosphere: “What I like is being with my classmates, who are wonderful. We help each other a lot, and the instructors take care of us.”

The Public Health Agency of Barcelona confirms these positive outcomes. “Physically, they feel more agile, with better balance and flexibility. They get to know themselves better and see that they can do it. Emotionally, they tell us it improves their mood and their management of fear. Self-esteem improves, they form bonds, and feel less alone. And for the community network, they have a sense of belonging to the group and the neighborhood,” emphasizes Cristina Rey.

The culmination of the workshop, scheduled for the end of May, will be a festival where the seniors will showcase how the circus has transformed their lives. It will be a vibrant celebration of their achievements, a testament to their resilience, and a powerful message that age is just a number when it comes to embracing new challenges and finding joy.
