Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain – Barcelona continues to solidify its position as a leading digital hub in Southern Europe, with its digital talent ecosystem experiencing robust growth. According to the 8th edition of the “Digital Talent Overview 2026” report, compiled by Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the city now boasts 135,890 ICT professionals, marking a 4.85% increase over the past year.
Significant Growth in Digital Employment
During 2025, Barcelona’s digital ecosystem welcomed 6,282 new professionals, underscoring a sustained growth trajectory that positions digital talent as a pivotal driver of the local economy. Digital professionals now constitute 6.5% of Barcelona’s total employment, highlighting the sector’s increasing importance.
The report also emphasizes the city’s strong ability to attract talent, with one in three digital professionals working in Barcelona originating from outside Catalonia. Employment generation within the digital sector is expanding 3.6 times faster than the overall labor market in the city.
Rising Demand for AI and Emerging Technologies
The study reveals a transformative impact of artificial intelligence on the digital labor market. For the first time, Barcelona has surpassed 1,000 job offers related to AI, and the city now counts over 1,200 specialists in this field.
This trend extends to other emerging technologies, with significant demand increases observed in 2025:
- Semiconductors: +97%
- New Space: +67%
- Blockchain: +57%
- Computer Vision: +55%
- Quantum Computing: +49%
- 5G: +47%
The top three specialties generating the most job opportunities last year were web development, application development, and cloud computing. Conversely, cybersecurity remains the area with the most significant talent shortage, followed by cloud and Agile/Scrum, where filling vacancies continues to be a challenge.
A Maturing, Specialized, and Competitive Ecosystem
The report indicates an evolution of the digital market towards increasingly specialized profiles. Following years of strong growth in technological demand, companies continue to recruit talent but are prioritizing professionals with greater experience and advanced knowledge.
Consequently, vacancies for junior profiles have decreased by 27% over the past three years, while the demand for mid and senior professionals has surged. This evolution reflects the maturation of Barcelona’s digital ecosystem, which now requires more experience and capacity to take on specialized responsibilities.
Increased Female Representation and Student Enrollment in ICT
Female representation in the sector continues to advance, with women now accounting for 33.4% of Barcelona’s digital talent, exceeding the European average of 30.8%. Since 2018, female participation in the sector has risen by nearly 12 percentage points. However, a gender pay gap of 2.04% persists.
Concurrently, the talent base is expanding due to the growth of technology education. During the 2024-2025 academic year, ICT degrees in Catalonia enrolled over 22,700 students, and technology master’s programs now have more than 7,000 students, reinforcing the alignment between education and the needs of the digital market.
AI Integration in Daily Work
This year’s report includes a new barometer on the adoption of artificial intelligence among digital professionals. Data shows that 72.6% of developers use AI tools daily, and 70.8% already have access to them through their organizations. The most frequently used tools include ChatGPT, Claude, and GitHub Copilot.
Despite the widespread adoption of these tools, the role of professionals remains crucial: nearly 88% of participants always or almost always review AI-generated code before implementation. Technologies primarily serve as support tools, while oversight, validation, and critical thinking functions continue to be performed by human professionals.
