Community of Madrid Establishes First Environmental Awards to Recognize Exemplary Conservation and Protection Initiatives
Madrid, June 10, 2026 – The Governing Council of the Community of Madrid has approved the preliminary report for the creation of the region’s first annual Environmental Awards. These awards aim to distinguish exemplary initiatives and actions that contribute to the protection of the natural environment, the conservation of resources, and the balanced development of the Madrid territory.
The awards, which will be honorary in nature, are open to individuals, companies, organizations, and institutions that excel in scientific and technical knowledge, environmental dissemination, and the implementation of innovative projects in this field.
Eight Categories and a Special Recognition
The awards will be granted in eight distinct categories:
- Circular Economy
- Water and Air
- Energy
- Biodiversity
- Active and Sustainable Forest Management
- Territorial and Environmental Communication
- Conservation and Restoration of the Territory
- Rural Environment
The ‘Rural Environment’ category will include the special ‘Santa María de la Cabeza’ Award, which will highlight women living and working in rural municipalities of the region who have demonstrated a trajectory of leadership and commitment to revitalizing these areas.
Furthermore, the decree allows for the possibility of granting extraordinary distinctions for particularly relevant actions related to environmental protection that do not fit into any of the established categories.
Part of the 2026 Year of the Environment Initiative
This initiative by the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, and Interior is part of the measures planned for the declaration of 2026 as the ‘Year of the Environment’ in the Community of Madrid, an agreement reached by the Governing Council on February 25.
The creation of these awards underscores the Community of Madrid’s commitment to fostering environmental stewardship and recognizing the efforts of those dedicated to preserving its natural heritage. The awards are expected to encourage further innovation and public engagement in environmental protection across the region.
