Madrid Pioneers Psychological Support for Families Facing Disability

Madrid, June 1, 2026 – The Community of Madrid has announced the launch of ‘Lo que nadie te cuenta’ (What No One Tells You), a groundbreaking program designed to offer psychological and emotional support to families who are confronting disability in their immediate environment for the first time. This initiative, the first of its kind in Spain, has been approved by the Governing Council and will be implemented in collaboration with the Pegasus Foundation.

A Year-Long Pilot Program to Support 60 Families

The pilot project is scheduled to run for one year, from May 2026 to May 2027. It will involve 60 families who are users of centers within the public network for disability care managed by the regional administration. This free and personalized service will be delivered by a team of dedicated professionals.

Focus on Caregiver Well-being and Emotional Impact

The program aims to transform how families experience disability and manage its emotional impact. A key focus will be on the well-being of caregivers, recognizing that their situation directly influences the quality of life for the person with the disability. By supporting caregivers, the program seeks to create a more positive and sustainable environment for all family members.

The Pegasus Foundation: A Partner in Change

The Pegasus Foundation, established in 2017, is dedicated to changing societal perceptions and support for difference and disability. Since its inception, the foundation has focused on identifying unmet needs and currently works with 50 professionals, assisting over 800 families annually. Their expertise will be crucial in the successful implementation of ‘Lo que nadie te cuenta’.

Part of a Broader Strategy: Horizon 2028

‘Lo que nadie te cuenta’ is an integral component of the new Madrid Strategy for Disability Care Horizon 2028. This comprehensive strategy outlines an investment of 4.8 billion euros and includes 316 cross-cutting measures from all departments of the regional government, demonstrating a significant commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities and their families in the Community of Madrid.

Commitment to Comprehensive Disability Care

This new program underscores the Community of Madrid’s dedication to providing holistic support for its citizens. By addressing the psychological and emotional needs of families, the government aims to create a more inclusive and supportive society where disability is understood and accompanied with empathy and effective resources. The initiative reflects a proactive approach to disability care, moving beyond traditional services to encompass the vital emotional well-being of those most affected.

The success of this pilot program could set a precedent for similar initiatives across Spain, highlighting the importance of psychological support in navigating the challenges and complexities of disability within a family context. The collaboration between the regional government and the Pegasus Foundation is expected to yield valuable insights and best practices for future disability support programs.

The Community of Madrid continues to emphasize its commitment to digital transformation and citizen engagement, with various digital services and communication channels available for residents to access information and support. This new program is another step in enhancing the quality of life for all residents, particularly those facing unique challenges.
