Known for his captivating thrillers, author Dan Brown has a deep-seated affection for Barcelona, a city that significantly influenced his novel ‘Origin.’ Brown recently shared insights into his life in the Catalan capital and his enduring bond with Spain during an appearance on the Spanish television show ‘El Hormiguero’ to promote his latest book, ‘The Last Secret.’

Dan Brown’s Spanish Connection: A Lifelong Love Affair

Born in 1964 in the United States, where he honed his literary skills at Amherst University and Phillips Exeter Academy, Brown’s connection to Spain dates back to his teenage years. “It was the first country I visited outside the United States. I was 16 and lived in Asturias with a wonderful family. During my visit, I fell in love with the culture, history, and, above all, the people and their language,” Brown explained in 2017 when he first introduced ‘Origin.’ He has since returned to Spain eleven times, more than any other country, and even attended classes at the University of Seville for a year. Cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, and Bilbao frequently feature in his novels.

Barcelona: A Home and a Muse

Beyond his literary works, Barcelona holds a special place in Brown’s personal life. “I lived in Plaça de Catalunya and did my shopping at La Boqueria. I would wear a cap and sunglasses and visit places like La Pedrera to explore and look for something to inspire my writing,” he revealed. This personal connection is evident in ‘Origin,’ where Barcelona transforms into a symbolic backdrop for the protagonist, Robert Langdon. Langdon’s journey through the city mirrors Brown’s own explorations, taking readers to iconic landmarks such as Montserrat Monastery, the Sagrada Familia, and Casa Milà. Brown also mentions other notable Barcelona spots like Els Quatre Gats, Cafè de l’Òpera, and Parc Güell.

‘Origin’ and the Paradox of Spain

Brown chose Spain as the setting for ‘Origin’ due to its unique blend of tradition and innovation. “I have always considered Spain a land of beautiful paradoxes; a place with a rich tradition and history that, at the same time, continues to forge the future by innovating in science and technology. For this reason, when I set out to write a novel that mixed the ancient and the modern, I knew I could only choose one place to set it,” the author stated during the book’s presentation in Barcelona.

The Creative Process: Secrecy and Inspiration

Brown’s creative process is as intriguing as his novels. He is known for his meticulous approach, which includes keeping translators under strict confidentiality agreements and employing ‘hacker-proof’ manuscript security to prevent leaks. This dedication ensures the integrity of his stories, which often delve into profound philosophical questions. “I am convinced that human consciousness survives the death of the body,” Brown has stated, hinting at the deeper themes explored in his work.

Future Endeavors and Enduring Love for Spain

With ‘The Last Secret’ now released, featuring his iconic character Robert Langdon, Brown continues to weave intricate narratives that captivate audiences worldwide. His enduring love for Spain and its vibrant culture remains a constant source of inspiration, promising more thrilling adventures set against the backdrop of this fascinating country. As Zoe Campos reported on December 13, 2025, Brown’s influence on literature and his personal connection to Spain continue to grow, solidifying his place as a master storyteller.
