Barcelona, June 7th – Explora III, the newest luxury cruise ship from Explora Journeys, has successfully concluded its sea trials in the Mediterranean and is now undergoing final preparations for its highly anticipated debut. The vessel, constructed by Fincantieri in Sestri Ponente, near Genoa, is scheduled to commence its pre-inaugural voyage on July 24th, 2026, culminating in its official inauguration ceremony in Barcelona on August 1st.
Explora III: A New Era of Sustainable Luxury Cruising
The successful completion of the sea trials marks a crucial milestone for Explora III, validating its technical and operational performance. The ship has returned to the Italian shipyard for the final stages of interior outfitting and operational readiness before its official handover. Its debut will feature a strong Mediterranean focus, with a pre-inaugural journey titled “Mediterranean Prelude” leading to Barcelona.
Following the Barcelona inauguration, Explora III will embark on its inaugural seven-night voyage from the Catalan capital to Lisbon on August 3rd.
Expansion Plans and Environmental Commitment
Explora III’s entry into service is a significant step in Explora Journeys’ ambitious expansion strategy. The luxury cruise brand, part of MSC Group, aims to operate a fleet of six vessels by 2028. Explora I began operations in 2023, followed by Explora II in 2024, making Explora III the third operational ship for the company this summer.
A key feature of Explora III is its propulsion system. It will be the first Explora Journeys vessel to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This technology underscores the company’s commitment to transitioning towards lower-emission operations. According to Explora Journeys, the use of LNG provides flexibility for future integration of renewable fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG.
Anna Nash, President of Explora Journeys, stated, “The completion of Explora III’s sea trials represents another source of pride for Explora Journeys and a further step in realizing our long-term fleet vision. As the first LNG-powered ship in our fleet, it also signifies an important advancement in our transition towards lower-emission technologies, contributing to our goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in our maritime operations by 2050.”
This new generation of energy-efficient vessels reinforces the cruise industry’s move towards less carbon-intensive propulsion solutions.
Inaugural Season: Mediterranean to the Atlantic
After its inaugural call in Barcelona and its maiden voyage to Lisbon, Explora III will continue its season with itineraries across Northern Europe, including the Norwegian fjords, Iceland, and Greenland. Subsequently, the ship will cross the Atlantic to operate in New England and along the East Coast of Canada.
Anna Nash emphasized the company’s current phase of expansion, noting, “This summer, Explora Journeys will have three ships sailing simultaneously, a significant milestone that demonstrates the strength of our vision and the extraordinary momentum the brand is experiencing.”
With a gross tonnage of 72,810, Explora III is poised to offer exceptional experiences to its guests, reflecting Explora Journeys’ commitment to conscious innovation and responsible luxury sea travel.
