Barcelona Summit: A Turning Point for the Global Left

Barcelona, April 22, 2026 – The first edition of the Global Progressive Mobilization Summit, held in Barcelona, has been lauded as a significant moment for the global left. Hana Jalloul, a leading figure in the PSOE, the party’s International Policy and Development Cooperation Secretary, and a Vice-President of the Socialist International, described the event as a “turning point” in an interview.

Jalloul highlighted the unprecedented nature of the summit, which managed to unite diverse progressive spaces. “We have achieved a very important work of union,” she stated, emphasizing that despite perceived differences, common values and principles against the far-right were paramount. These include the defense of international law, respect for national sovereignty, the rule of law, combating inequality, promoting women’s rights, fighting climate change, and regulating artificial intelligence.

Challenges and Achievements in Organizing the Summit

Organizing the forum presented considerable challenges, primarily due to the need to coordinate major progressive organizations with long histories. Jalloul noted that the Progressive Alliance, a 2012 split from the Socialist International (which Sánchez now presides over), had some initial reservations that were ultimately overcome. The European Socialist Party also played a crucial role, complementing the global reach of the Socialist International, which includes sister parties from Africa, America, and Asia.

Logistics proved to be another significant hurdle. The event, which typically requires a year of planning, was executed in half that time. Coordinating the agendas of parties worldwide, from Japan and the Philippines to Ghana and Sweden, and managing a hundred panels with academics and foundations, was a complex undertaking. The summit attracted prominent figures such as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, German Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, and Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party.

Pedro Sánchez: A Catalyst for Progressive Unity

Jalloul credited Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as the “catalyst” for the Barcelona summit. His message resonated across all segments of the left, from classic European social democracy to Latin American left-wing movements and the Global South. Sánchez’s leadership, as the head of a progressive government in the EU, President of the Socialist International, and Secretary-General of the PSOE, played a crucial role in bringing these diverse groups together.

Sánchez’s willingness to denounce injustices in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, and his call for an end to the “illegal war against Iran,” without the backing of international bodies, further solidified his standing. His initiatives, such as combating the negative effects of social media, have also gained international recognition. Last year, he was the only European leader invited to the Arab League Summit due to his stance on recognizing the State of Palestine and advocating for a peace conference when others were not. This has led to him being viewed as a “hero” in the Global South and beyond, making him a trending topic in various regions.

Reclaiming Progressive Pride and International Referent

The summit also aimed to restore pride in progressive ideals. Jalloul emphasized that the gathering of over 5,500 delegates served to boost morale, facilitating the exchange of experiences and ideas. “We are not alone, as the right wants us to believe; we are many more than they say!” she declared. The event reinforced a sense of pride in advocating for the disadvantaged, denouncing genocides and injustices, and ultimately being on the “right side of history.”

Furthermore, the summit highlighted Spain’s growing role as a progressive referent on the global stage. Jalloul expressed humility in acknowledging this, while also appreciating the international support and recognition for Sánchez’s public persona.

New Era for Spain-Mexico Relations and Opportunity for the Global Left

The Barcelona summit also marked a new chapter in diplomatic relations between Spain and Mexico, following a period of tension. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s decision to make her first trip to Europe to attend an event in defense of democracy was seen as a significant positive development.

Jalloul suggested that the excesses of the far-right have created an opportunity for the global left. She pointed to recent setbacks for far-right figures, such as Viktor Orbán’s defeat in Hungary and Giorgia Meloni’s loss in a referendum on judicial reform in Italy. These events, occurring shortly before the Barcelona gathering, underscored the increased importance of the summit. The presence of numerous political leaders who are currently in opposition but are potential future presidents further amplified its impact.

As an example of the summit’s influence, Jalloul cited the far-right “Patriots for Europe” bloc’s poorly attended demonstration in Milan, which called for the deportation of millions of migrants. She also criticized the inconsistencies of some far-right narratives, such as María Corina Machado’s praise for Donald Trump while Trump negotiated with Delcy Rodríguez regarding Venezuela. Jalloul also highlighted Spain’s humanitarian efforts, granting over 265,000 residencies to Venezuelans since 2019, a significant increase compared to previous administrations.
