The Community of Madrid is experiencing a dramatic shift in weather conditions, as the AEMET has activated a yellow alert for snow in the sierra, metropolitan, and Henares areas. This alert is in effect until 12:00 PM on Monday, with temperatures expected to drop significantly, reaching below zero degrees Celsius across the region.

Snowfall Expected Across the Region

Precipitation, in the form of light snow, is anticipated until midday. The sierra region could see up to 5 cm of snow accumulation, while the metropolitan and Henares areas might experience localized accumulations of up to 2 cm. This widespread snowfall is a notable event for the Spanish capital.

Temperature Plunge and Widespread Frost

Temperatures are on a downward trend, with a particularly sharp drop in some areas. Minimum temperatures are generally expected to range between -1°C and -3°C, occurring late in the day. In the sierra, a yellow alert for extreme cold is also active until 9:00 AM, with temperatures potentially plummeting to -7°C. Widespread light frosts are forecast, with moderate frosts possible in the sierra. Daytime high temperatures are unlikely to exceed 6°C or 7°C in most parts of the region.

Weather Outlook for Madrid and Surrounding Areas

The morning will see cloudy or overcast skies, gradually clearing to partly cloudy conditions by midday. Winds will be light to moderate, predominantly from the north.

Specific temperature ranges for key areas include:

  • Madrid: -1°C to 5°C
  • Alcalá de Henares: -2°C to 6°C
  • Aranjuez: -3°C to 7°C
  • Collado Villalba: -3°C to 3°C
  • Getafe: -2°C to 6°C
  • Navalcarnero: -2°C to 6°C

The Community of Madrid has activated operational situation 0 of its Inclement Weather Plan in response to the anticipated snowfall.

Public Transport and Safety Measures

As residents prepare for the Three Kings’ Day celebrations, authorities have issued advisories regarding public transport and safety:

  • Public Transport: Information on how to reach the Madrid Three Kings’ Parade by public transport (metro, bus, and train) is available.
  • Traffic Disruptions: Traffic cuts and changes to 29 EMT bus lines are expected for the Three Kings’ Parade, with metro services reinforced.
  • Emergency Preparedness: The activation of the Inclement Weather Plan ensures preparedness for potential disruptions and emergencies caused by the severe weather.

Residents are urged to exercise caution, stay informed about weather updates, and plan their travel accordingly. The cold snap and snowfall are expected to impact daily routines, especially during the morning commute.
