Hospital Clínic Barcelona Generates 2.35 Euros in Social Value for Every Euro Invested

Barcelona, February 4, 2026 – For every euro invested by the public administration, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona generates 2.35 euros in social value, according to the report ‘The Integrated Social Value of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona’. The study estimates the gross integrated social value generated by the center in 2023 at 1,753 million euros. This comprehensive analysis was conducted jointly by Hospital Clínic Barcelona and the UPF Barcelona School of Management (UPF-BSM).

The research, led by Luz Parrondo, researcher and Senior Lecturer at UPF-BSM, and Rafel X. Vidal Serra, Head of the Digital Transformation Support and Data Management Area of the Economic Directorate of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, with the support of the Heres Social consultancy, utilized the Integrated Social Value (ISV) methodology. This approach allows for the identification, quantification, and monetization of social benefits perceived by groups directly linked to the hospital’s activities.

Breaking Down the Social Impact

The experts have broken down this integrated social value by measuring, on one hand, the Specific Social Value (1,106 million euros), which refers to value transferred without a market price counterpart, and on the other hand, the Socio-Economic Value (646 million euros), which corresponds to the social value generated through the economic activity of the organization, both directly and indirectly.

This economic activity positions the healthcare institution as a driver of wealth creation, primarily benefiting employees (238 million euros) and having a ripple effect on suppliers (122 million euros). Furthermore, it contributes to the sustainability of the system with a return of 282 million euros to public administrations.

A key novelty of the report is its focus on the value generated for two crucial groups: patients and users, with a quantified social value of 1,057 million euros, and the center’s professionals, with a social value amounting to 48.4 million euros.

“Measuring the social value generated by public healthcare entities has been a complex challenge, as many benefits are perceived as intangible or long-term. However, this study demonstrates that it is not only possible to know the social value that a hospital generates, but also to monetize it, allowing for holistic comparisons and its integration into future strategic plans,” explained Parrondo during the presentation.

Direct Patient Care: The Core of Social Impact

In the analysis of the first interest group-patients and users-one of the main conclusions of the report is that the greatest social impact of Hospital Clínic is generated in direct patient care, with a value of 1,008 million euros. This figure represents approximately 95% of the hospital’s total social value when analyzing benefits for patients.

This impact is generated through a wide range of care services, including hospital and surgical discharges, outpatient consultations, and other highly complex procedures, as well as the dispensing of outpatient hospital medication. It also includes care for family members through support and information tasks performed by nursing staff.

Following this, the variable of improved accessibility to healthcare stands out, with an estimated value of 48.5 million euros, highlighting the additional effort made by the hospital to reduce waiting lists.

Furthermore, other variables analyzed in the integrated social value for patients include the quality of information provided to users throughout the care process and support for caregivers, especially through voluntary accompaniment, which has benefited patients and their families.

“With this social accounting exercise, Hospital Clínic not only reinforces its commitment to transparency and sustainability but also aims to contribute to the consolidation of a value-based healthcare model, placing people and their experience at the center,” said Rosa García, Economic-Financial Director of Hospital Clínic Barcelona.

Value for Hospital Professionals

In the analysis of the second interest group-the center’s professionals-the variable of talent retention and loyalty stands out, representing 37.34% of the value. In this regard, the center has promoted various initiatives to reduce turnover and foster stable work environments, recognizing the value of accumulated knowledge and continuity of care. This is followed by the variable of attendance at congresses and international positioning (25.70%), as well as the social impact of innovation and research (19.65%).

“This report represents a step forward in evaluating the real impact of public healthcare, as it provides an objective tool to improve internal policies, strengthen public management, and advance accountability. Furthermore, it establishes the foundations for continuing the analysis of the hospital’s social value, extending it to other interest groups,” explained Rosa Garcia Miralles.

An Event Highlighting the Social Impact of Public Healthcare

The presentation event, held at the UPF-BSM headquarters, was presided over by Fàtima Piqué, Deputy General Director of UPF-BSM, and Josep M. Campistol, General Director of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, and featured interventions by the study’s authors.

The meeting also included a round table entitled “The health sector as a driver of value,” with the participation of Rosa García Miralles, Economic-Financial Director of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona; Oriol Montanyà, Director of the Sustainability Observatory of UPF-BSM, and Raquel Sánchez-Valle, Medical Director of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
