Barcelona, December 16, 2025 – Humana, a leading second-hand clothing retailer, is further solidifying its presence in Barcelona with the inauguration of its 25th store in the city. The new establishment, located at 7 bis Avinyó Street in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, is set to open its doors on Friday, December 19, bringing Humana’s national store count to 57.
Strategic Expansion in a Key City
This new 210-square-meter retail space will feature a curated selection of over 5,000 second-hand garments. These items are meticulously sourced from public donations collected in Humana’s distinctive green containers and at their existing stores. Following collection, the clothing undergoes a comprehensive classification process at Humana’s plant in l’Ametlla del Vallès, Barcelona province, ensuring quality and suitability for resale. The new store falls under the entity’s “Familia” store category, one of two commercial formats developed over the past five years.
Rafael Mas, Humana’s director of projects and external relations, emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion. “We are committed to opening new stores because we identify high potential in textile reuse and maintain profitability even in a complex context,” Mas stated. He acknowledged, however, that “the sector is going through a moment of concern” due to the declining quality and durability of clothing, which limits its lifespan and potential for reuse. In response, Mas highlighted Humana’s dedication to “physical stores based on genuine used textiles, the result of a professional, traceable model fully oriented towards achieving environmental and social objectives.”
Growing Acceptance of Second-Hand Fashion
The inauguration of this store underscores Humana’s strengthened position in Barcelona, a city deemed crucial to its growth strategy, and expands its physical network across Spain. Over the past decade, Humana has significantly increased its commercial network in Spain, growing from 36 stores in 2015 to the 57 stores it will operate by the end of the current year. Concurrently, the customer base has nearly tripled during this period, signaling a rising acceptance of second-hand fashion among consumers.
Specifically, with this opening, Humana will have added a total of six new points of sale throughout 2025: three in Barcelona, two in Madrid, and one in Seville. This expansion has been partially offset by the closure of one establishment in the capital.
Commitment to Environmental and Social Impact
Humana’s retail operations are an integral part of the Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo project, an initiative launched in 1987 with the dual aim of environmental protection through textile reuse and improving living conditions in developing communities. In 2024, Humana’s stores collectively sold 7.6 million garments, generating vital resources for international cooperation projects and social initiatives within Spain. It is worth noting that among its recent developments, the organization announced the closure of its Galician delegation after 25 years of activity in the region, citing that the application of current legislation restricts “free competition.”
