Madrid, April 23, 2026 – The Madrid City Council, through the Municipal Transport Company (EMT Madrid), has launched a new selection process to establish a pool of candidates for bus driver positions. This initiative aims to reinforce public transport services and address staffing needs arising from retirements.
Application Period and Requirements
The application period commenced on April 22nd at 00:01 and will remain open until 23:59 on May 11th, 2026. EMT Madrid will progressively draw from this pool of candidates to fill vacancies as needed.
Prospective applicants must meet several key requirements, including:
- Possession of a Class D driving license with a minimum of six months’ seniority.
- A valid Professional Aptitude Certificate (CAP) for passenger transport.
- A minimum of 10 points on their driving license.
- At least six months of experience within the last 20 years driving passenger transport vehicles with more than 16 seats.
- A secondary education certificate (Graduado en ESO) or equivalent.
- Spanish nationality, nationality of an EU member state, or legal residency in Spain.
Certain professional experiences are excluded from this call, such as driving taxis, VTCs, light rail, trams, trains, freight transport, heavy machinery, or auxiliary services, as well as any activity not directly related to bus passenger transport.
The Four-Phase Selection Process
The selection process is structured into four distinct phases:
- Application and Verification: Submission of applications and verification of compliance with all stated requirements.
- Aptitude and Knowledge Tests: This phase includes aptitude and personal competency tests, a test on occupational risk prevention and equality, and a theoretical-professional knowledge test.
- Practical Driving Test: A practical bus driving test to assess candidates’ operational skills.
- Medical Examination: A comprehensive medical check-up to ensure candidates meet health standards.

Madrid’s Commitment to Public Transport
EMT Madrid is actively implementing a recruitment plan to strengthen its driving staff. In 2025 alone, 478 professionals were hired, and an additional 118 drivers have joined in 2026 so far. Cumulatively, from late 2019 to April 2026, the municipal company has incorporated a total of 2,270 new professionals.
This ongoing recruitment drive aligns with the Madrid City Council’s broader strategy to enhance public transport and promote more sustainable mobility, in accordance with the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
