Madrid City Council: Fostering Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship
Madrid, January 28 – The Madrid City Council, through its Delegate Councilor for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Ángel Niño, emphasized its pivotal role as a “connector between scientific and technological entrepreneurship and the labor market” during the inaugural day of Science for Industry (S4i) 2026. This significant international gathering, dedicated to knowledge and technology transfer, is taking place on January 28 and 29 at La Nave Madrid.
Madrid as a Hub for Innovation
Councilor Niño underscored that Madrid’s selection as the host city for a forum attracting universities, research centers, startups, investors, corporations, and public administrations is not coincidental. He attributed this to the City Council’s active involvement in various initiatives designed to facilitate the transition “from the laboratory to the company.” This support includes backing spin-offs and implementing incubation, acceleration, and scaling programs for entrepreneurial projects.
According to Niño, the City Council actively “promotes the ideas of students and researchers to connect them with the job market and enable their development in the business sphere.” This strategic approach aims to cultivate a robust ecosystem where innovation can thrive and contribute to economic growth.
“Margarita Salas” Awards and Innovation Centers
Complementing its broader strategy, the Madrid City Council also champions the “Margarita Salas” Scientific Research and Technological Development Awards. In 2026, these prestigious awards are celebrating their sixth edition, recognizing outstanding doctoral theses defended at universities within the Community of Madrid. This initiative further strengthens the link between academic research and practical application.
Furthermore, Madrid provides entrepreneurs with an extensive network of over ten innovation centers and business incubators strategically located across the city. These facilities offer essential spaces, specialized programs, and crucial market connections that foster the growth, collaboration, and consolidation of technological and scientific projects within Madrid’s dynamic ecosystem.
The City Council’s comprehensive approach, combining direct support for startups, recognition of scientific excellence, and the provision of vital infrastructure, positions Madrid as a leading city for scientific and technological innovation and entrepreneurship.
