Madrid, May 28, 2026 – The Community of Madrid has announced a significant investment of 3.8 million euros to convert Pavilion 2 of the Enfermera Isabel Zendal Hospital into a specialized hospitalization center for neurorehabilitation. This new facility will provide comprehensive care for adults and children suffering from acquired brain damage and spinal cord injuries. The regional government’s Council of Government authorized the tender for these works yesterday, May 27, 2026, with an estimated execution period of five months.
Integral Care and Advanced Technology for Patients
The primary objective of this initiative is to offer patients integral care, leveraging advanced diagnostic imaging systems and cutting-edge technologies for their treatments. Furthermore, this new public health resource in Madrid aims to advance research into these types of pathologies, enhancing the region’s capabilities in neurological rehabilitation.
“This center will provide a much-needed specialized environment for patients with brain damage and spinal cord injuries, ensuring they receive the best possible care and access to the latest therapeutic advancements,” stated a representative from the Community of Madrid.
Complementary to Existing Neurorehabilitation Efforts
This specialized hospitalization center will complement the Neurorehabilitation Center planned for Pavilion 1 of the same Valdebebas health complex. The construction of the Pavilion 1 center was authorized by the Council of Government on May 13, 2026, with a budget of 5.9 million euros. Together, these two facilities will form a robust and comprehensive neurorehabilitation hub within the Enfermera Isabel Zendal Hospital.
Emergency Preparedness and Future-Proofing
Upon completion of the adaptation of Pavilion 2, the space will retain its capacity to be reconfigured as a high-density hospitalization infrastructure during public health emergencies, mirroring its original role during the COVID-19 pandemic. This dual functionality ensures that the facility can adapt to evolving healthcare needs while serving its primary purpose of neurorehabilitation.
Zendal Hospital: A Hub for Brain and Neurological Pathologies
This new development is part of a broader strategy by the Community of Madrid to establish the Enfermera Isabel Zendal Hospital as a reference center for cerebral and neurological pathologies. This strategic shift began in April 2024 with the launch of the Specialized Day Care Center for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (CEADELA), which has already served over 250 patients.
In addition to these initiatives, the regional government plans to incorporate an Experimental Institute of Neurotechnology for Brain Health within the complex. This institute will focus on addressing degenerative diseases linked to the central nervous system, further solidifying the hospital’s role as a leader in neurological care and research.
