Madrid to Launch Direct Flights to Singapore Changi Airport, Boosting Asian Connectivity
Madrid, May 9, 2026 – Madrid is set to significantly expand its international connectivity with the introduction of direct flights to Singapore, beginning on October 26. Singapore Airlines will operate five weekly flights, directly linking the Spanish capital with Changi Airport, consistently recognized as one of the world’s premier airports for its facilities, services, and extensive global network.
This new route marks a crucial development for Madrid’s international tourism strategy, particularly targeting the burgeoning Asian market. Through Changi’s vast network, travelers from Madrid will gain direct access to over 100 cities across Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the Indian subcontinent, facilitating increased tourism and business opportunities.
The initiative is part of the “Madrid Turismo by IFEMA Madrid” project, a collaborative effort by the City Council, the Community of Madrid, and IFEMA, aimed at solidifying Madrid’s position as a major hub in Southern Europe. In recent years, Madrid has also strengthened its direct connections with other key destinations, including Tokyo, Doha, Seoul, and several Chinese cities.
Changi Airport: The World’s Best
Changi Airport’s reputation precedes it, having been named the best airport of 2026 at the World Airport Awards. This prestigious accolade marks its fourteenth win, a testament to its exceptional services, which include check-in efficiency, clear signage, robust security, and the friendliness of its staff. The awards are determined by votes from passengers representing over a hundred nationalities.
In addition to the top honor, Changi Airport also secured awards for the best airport dining experience, the best airport globally in the 60 to 70 million passenger category, the world’s best airport immigration service, and the best airport in Asia.
Economic Impact and Strategic Importance for Madrid
Almudena Maíllo, Delegate Councillor for Tourism, emphasized the significant economic and strategic importance of this new international connection. “The arrival of Singapore Airlines in Madrid is excellent news for the Madrid economy. This route, with an estimated impact of 265 million euros, provides us with direct access to one of the markets with the greatest growth potential in the world,” Maíllo explained.
Maíllo further added that this connection “encourages us to continue working so that more and more Asian travelers can discover a unique city in the world and fall in love with everything Madrid has to offer.”
Asia has emerged as a priority market for Madrid due to the profile of its visitors. According to the city council’s tourism data, Japanese and Chinese tourists were among the highest spenders in the capital during 2025, with average expenditures exceeding 3,700 euros per person.
With this new route, Madrid aims to continue attracting long-stay tourists with high purchasing power, thereby helping to de-seasonalize visits to the city throughout the year.
