Madrid’s Christmas 2025: Your Ultimate Guide to Festive Fun

As the year draws to a close, Madrid once again embraces the festive spirit, transforming into a magical destination filled with enchanting lights, bustling markets, and a heartwarming atmosphere perfect for everyone. This comprehensive guide outlines all the must-do activities and events to make your Christmas in Madrid unforgettable.

Dazzling Christmas Lights and Belenes

The city’s iconic Christmas lights illuminate Madrid with over 13 million LED bulbs across all 21 districts. This year, Gran Vía debuts a new snowflake design and features a 22-meter Christmas tree in front of the Metrópolis building. Highlights include a 12-meter candle at Nuevos Ministerios, two 10-meter angels guarding Plaza de Carlos V, and a monumental 12-meter nativity scene with over 70,000 lights in front of the Congress of Deputies. Classic figures like the luminous sphere between Bailén and Plaza de España, and the giant ‘menina’ on Paseo del Prado, also return.

Lighting Schedule:

  • Sunday to Thursday: 6:00 PM to midnight
  • Fridays and Saturdays: 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM
  • December 24th and January 5th: 6:00 PM to 3:00 AM
  • New Year’s Eve: 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM

Explore Madrid’s traditional ‘belenes’ (nativity scenes), including the popular display at Palacio de Cibeles by José Luis Mayo Lebrija, featuring 200 figures. The Museo de San Isidro hosts an exhibition of 12 international belenes, and the Museo de Historia de Madrid showcases a Neapolitan belén with 51 wooden and clay figures.

Ice Skating Rinks and Circus Shows

Ice skating is a quintessential Christmas activity in Madrid. Popular rinks can be found at Plaza de España, Plaza de Colón, Matadero, and the Crystal Gallery of Palacio de Cibeles, with prices ranging from 7 to 10 euros. A free option is available in Vallecas, near the Renfe Asamblea de Madrid-Entrevías station, where gloves are required. This location also offers a reading booth, toy library, and children’s entertainment.

For acrobatic and juggling enthusiasts, Teatro Circo Price in Lavapiés presents a special Christmas show until January 6th. The 1 hour 40 minute performance costs 14 euros per ticket.

Festive Markets and Shopping

Madrid’s squares come alive with traditional Christmas markets. The Plaza Mayor market, a tradition for over 100 years, is a must-visit. Other markets can be found in Oporto, Aluche, and Ópera. Further afield, explore El Corte Inglés de Castellana market, the artisan market on Paseo de Recoletos, and the classic Plaza de España market, which also features an ice rink.

The city also hosts themed international markets, including a Swiss market (Club Suizo de Madrid), a German Christmas market (Adventsbasar), and Saint George’s Church Christmas Market.

Concerts and Cultural Events

Enjoy a diverse program of concerts throughout the festive season:

  • Orcam Concerts: Teatro Auditorio de San Lorenzo del Escorial hosts Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on December 23rd and a special carols program on December 27th.
  • Christmas Recital: The church of San Antonio de Aranjuez features Dvořák’s Mass in D major op. 86 on December 14th.
  • Clara Montes: Velintonia, the house of Vicente Aleixandre, presents a music and poetry recital on December 14th.

Many free concerts will take place on balconies, in churches, and in squares across the city. Check local listings for exact dates and times.

New Year’s Eve at Puerta del Sol

On December 31st, 15,000 people can ring in the New Year at Puerta del Sol. The façade of the Real Casa de Correos will feature a light and sound show by DJ and music producer Michael Canitrot. Access to the square is limited and will close once capacity is reached.

Three Kings’ Parade

The grand finale of the Christmas festivities is the Three Kings’ Parade on January 5th. The parade will travel from Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz (Nuevos Ministerios) to Plaza de Cibeles, passing through Paseo de la Castellana and Paseo de Recoletos. Expect floats, music, dancers, and plenty of sweets distributed by Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar.
