Madrid, January 27 – Café Central, the emblematic jazz club in Madrid, is exploring new locations to continue its 43-year legacy after its lease was not renewed at its long-standing Plaza del Ángel premises. The Ateneo de Madrid has emerged as the frontrunner among several proposals, offering a potential new home for the renowned cultural institution.
A Reprieve for a Madrid Institution
The club’s management announced in July 2025 that it would close, sparking concern among music lovers and local associations. However, a legal loophole allowed Café Central to extend its operations until March 2026. This extension has provided crucial time for the club’s 35 employees and partners to search for a new venue.
“We thought everything would end on October 12th,” said a Café Central manager, reflecting on the initial closure announcement. “A day after announcing the closure, we received about 40 phone messages with offers to move to various locations.”
The Ateneo de Madrid Steps In
Among the many offers, the proposal from Luis Arroyo, president of the Ateneo de Madrid, stood out. Arroyo, upon learning of Café Central’s plight through a news article, promptly contacted the club to offer the cultural institution as a potential new home.
The manager of Café Central described the Ateneo as “a wonderful place,” hinting that the historic meeting place for Madrid’s intellectuals is a strong candidate to host the jazz club’s performances. However, caution is being exercised before a final decision is made.
A Legacy of Jazz and Culture
Since its opening on August 12, 1982, Café Central has hosted over 14,500 performances and welcomed 1.3 million spectators, establishing itself as a vital part of Madrid’s cultural nightlife. Wire magazine once ranked it as the eighth most important jazz club in Europe.
The club’s management emphasizes the importance of allowing people to be excited about its future while keeping all options open. In the short term, they encourage the public to continue enjoying the current venue and its scheduled concerts.
The Search for a Sustainable Future
The original closure announcement came after the property owners at Plaza del Ángel, number 10, decided not to renew the lease. This decision led to an outpouring of support and numerous offers from various establishments across the capital, demonstrating the deep affection Madrid has for Café Central.
The ongoing negotiations highlight the challenges faced by cultural venues in urban centers, particularly concerning rising rents and property developments. The potential move to the Ateneo de Madrid offers a beacon of hope for the club’s continued existence and its contribution to the city’s vibrant jazz scene.
The final decision regarding Café Central’s new home is anticipated in the coming weeks, with all parties hoping for a resolution that will allow the club to continue its rich musical tradition in Madrid.
