Madrid’s May Long Weekend to be Marked by Storms and Cooler Temperatures
Madrid, May 1st, 2026 – Following a brief period of calm, unstable weather is set to return to the Community of Madrid, bringing storms and a drop in temperatures for the May long weekend, which includes Labour Day and May 2nd festivities. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts Saturday to be the most affected day, with potential for heavy thunderstorms.
Friday, May 1st: A Cloudy Start to the Long Weekend
This Friday, May 1st, a public holiday, will begin with mostly clear skies and high clouds, which are expected to increase as the afternoon progresses. In the late hours, isolated showers and potential thunderstorms are not ruled out in the Sierra region, hinting at the weather to come on Saturday.
Temperatures on Friday will remain largely stable, though a slight increase in minimum and maximum temperatures is anticipated in the Sierra. A more significant rise in temperatures is expected in the metropolitan area and the south. Minimums will range between 8 and 13 degrees Celsius, while maximums will settle between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius. Winds will be light and variable, shifting to a southerly component during central hours and southeasterly by late afternoon.
Saturday, May 2nd: The Peak of Instability with Strong Storms
Saturday is predicted to be the most unstable day of the May long weekend, with expected showers accompanied by thunderstorms. The sky will be cloudy, culminating in potentially strong thunderstorms in parts of the Sierra and the eastern extreme of the region. This stormy weather will bring a generalized decrease in maximum temperatures, which are expected to drop to between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures, however, will rise slightly, ranging from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius. Winds will be light, possibly moderate in some areas, with a southerly component.
Sunday: Calmer Weather and Decreased Rainfall
After Saturday’s stormy conditions, Sunday will see a calmer outlook. Skies will start cloudy, gradually clearing to partly cloudy. Scattered showers are still possible in the Sierra during the central hours of the day. Temperatures will show little change, with only a slight decrease in minimums to between 9 and 12 degrees Celsius, while maximums will remain between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius. Light and variable winds, predominantly from the southwest, may become moderate during central hours.
This forecast suggests that residents and visitors to Madrid should prepare for a wet and potentially disruptive long weekend, especially those planning outdoor activities on Saturday. The AEMET has already activated warnings in five communities across Spain due to the expected rainfall and thunderstorms.
