Madrid, January 5, 2026 – The Civil Guard’s Mountain Service reported over ten interventions in the Sierra de Madrid during the first weekend of the year. The most critical incident involved the rescue of five minors found disoriented and experiencing symptoms of hypothermia in Peñalara.

Multiple Rescues Across the Sierra

The operations, detailed by the Benemérita, highlight the challenges faced by visitors to the mountainous region, especially during adverse weather conditions. The five minors were successfully located and brought to safety after a search and rescue mission in Peñalara, a popular peak in the Guadarrama mountain range. This incident underscores the importance of proper preparation and awareness of weather changes when venturing into the mountains.

In addition to the rescue of the minors, other significant interventions included:

  • One person disoriented in La Maliciosa.
  • Another individual who suffered a fractured ankle, requiring immediate assistance.
  • Two separate aid missions on ski slopes, conducted in collaboration with the Red Cross.

These incidents occurred as Madrid experienced significant snowfall in the Sierra, the capital, and the Henares corridor, leading to challenging conditions for outdoor activities. Authorities had previously issued warnings regarding the notable drop in temperatures and expected snowfall, urging residents and visitors to exercise caution.

Warnings and Safety Measures

The Civil Guard reiterated its call for mountain enthusiasts to take extreme precautions, especially during winter. Key recommendations include:

  • Checking weather forecasts before embarking on any trip.
  • Carrying appropriate gear, including warm clothing, navigation tools, and sufficient food and water.
  • Informing others of planned routes and expected return times.
  • Avoiding solo excursions in unfamiliar or challenging terrain.

The regional authorities also implemented special deployment plans on Madrid’s roads due to the snow, utilizing 43 snowplows and over 150 tons of salt to maintain accessibility and safety.

The successful rescue operations are a testament to the swift and coordinated efforts of the Civil Guard and collaborating emergency services, ensuring the safety of individuals who encountered difficulties in the harsh mountain environment.
