Real Madrid’s Title Hopes Dwindle After 1-1 Draw with Girona

Madrid, April 10, 2026 – Real Madrid’s La Liga title aspirations suffered a significant blow on Friday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Girona at the Santiago Bernabéu. The result, with goals from Fede Valverde and Thomas Lemar, could see the Whites fall nine points behind league leaders Barcelona if their rivals win their upcoming match against Espanyol.

The match, played in Madrid, saw a Real Madrid side that appeared adrift and lacking their usual firepower, particularly from star forward Kylian Mbappé, who missed several key opportunities. The draw comes at a critical time for the club, sandwiched between their Champions League quarter-final clashes against Bayern Munich.

A Lackluster First Half

Coach Arbeloa made several changes to the starting lineup, bringing back Bellingham after 67 days, and including Militao, Camavinga, Carvajal, Asencio, and Fran García. Brahim Díaz also featured alongside the team’s star players. However, Real Madrid’s performance in the first half was described as flat, slow, and predictable, lacking the intensity needed to break down a resilient Girona side.

Girona, known for their ball possession and willingness to attack, created spaces that Real Madrid’s forwards, including Mbappé, failed to exploit. Mbappé had the best chances of the first half but was denied by Girona’s goalkeeper Gazzaniga and a defensive block. The game drifted into an uneventful period, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Valverde also had an attempt saved by Gazzaniga after a long ball from Carvajal.

The first half concluded with a subdued atmosphere at the Bernabéu, with some whistles from the home crowd, reflecting their frustration with the team’s performance.

Second Half: A Brief Resurgence and Girona’s Equalizer

Real Madrid emerged from the dressing room with a slightly improved tempo. Bellingham missed a clear chance, shooting directly at Gazzaniga. However, Fede Valverde broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with a powerful shot from outside the box, his fifth goal in La Liga this season. The goal briefly ignited the Bernabéu, but Real Madrid’s momentum quickly faded.

Mbappé failed to convert a good cross from Valverde, and Vinicius’s shot was weak after holding onto the ball for too long. The drop in intensity was dramatic, and the whistles from the crowd grew louder. Girona capitalized on Real Madrid’s passivity when Thomas Lemar equalized, his shot passing through Camavinga’s legs as the defense watched on.

The match saw the introduction of Güler and Gonzalo in the final minutes, but they were unable to turn the tide. Real Madrid appealed for a penalty on Mbappé after an elbow from Reis, which left the French forward bleeding, but the VAR did not intervene. The draw leaves Real Madrid’s title hopes hanging by a thread, potentially nine points adrift of Barcelona.

This result marks another setback for Real Madrid, reminiscent of their struggles in November and December, which ultimately led to the departure of Xabi Alonso from the bench. The team’s lack of rhythm, ideas, and desire continues to be a recurring theme.
