Community of Madrid to Fund Partial Retirement for Private School Teachers with Relief Contracts
Madrid, April 8, 2026 – The Community of Madrid will finance the partial retirement of private school teachers through relief contracts, an initiative scheduled to be implemented from the upcoming 2026/27 academic year. The Governing Council was informed today of a report on this agreement, which the Ministry of Education, Science and Universities will sign this week with employer and trade union organizations, responding to a historical demand from this group.
Agreement Details and Benefits for Teachers
As stated in the document, which will be valid until August 31, 2027, and will be renewed annually thereafter, teachers will be able to voluntarily opt for a reduction in their teaching hours during the two years prior to retirement. During this period, they will reduce their working week from 25 hours to a reduced schedule of seven hours, while maintaining 100% of their Social Security contributions. It is estimated that approximately 500 teachers will benefit from this measure.
In general terms, this will entail a 75% reduction in the usual working day. Teachers must have a minimum of six years of service at the center to be eligible. Furthermore, there is the possibility of concentrating these reduced working hours, provided there is an agreement with the school and its proper functioning is guaranteed.
Impact on New Teacher Recruitment
The relief contracts for partially retired teachers will facilitate the incorporation of new educators into Madrid’s private schools. New hires will preferably target unemployed individuals, will be full-time indefinite contracts, and must be maintained for at least two years after the partial retirement of the substituted teacher concludes.
