BlueTechPort: Barcelona’s New Lighthouse for the Blue Economy
Barcelona, May 2, 2026 – The Port of Barcelona is rapidly advancing its vision to become a global leader in the blue economy with the development of BlueTechPort. This ambitious project, encompassing a 25,000 square meter complex, is not only an architectural icon but also a strategic hub for innovation and talent attraction in a sector already generating over 11.19 billion euros in the city.
Lighthouse Program to Attract Global Talent
While construction of the physical complex progresses, with the first stone laid in January 2026, BlueTechPort is already activating its less tangible, yet equally crucial, dimension: attracting international talent and technology. This is the core objective of the Lighthouse International Acceleration Program, a gateway for startups seeking to test their solutions within a real port environment.
The program, spearheaded by BlueTechPort in collaboration with the Port of Barcelona and with technical support from Mind the Bridge, has opened its call for applications until June 1st. It targets early-stage or growth-phase startups with developed technologies in areas such as maritime logistics, automation, sustainability, and marine biotechnology. The selection process will be limited to eight projects.
Real-World Testing and Expert Support
Beyond its 12-week hybrid acceleration format, commencing on July 6th, the program’s key feature is direct access to the port’s operational environment. This provides a unique laboratory setting, allowing startups to develop pilots, test solutions, and validate models under real conditions. Participants will benefit from expert guidance and connections with investors and major corporations. The program will culminate in November, at the Smart City Expo World Congress, within the increasingly influential Tomorrow.Blue Economy space.
A Broader Strategy for Economic, Urban, and Innovative Growth
This initiative is part of a broader strategy that integrates economics, urban planning, and innovation. The BlueTechPort complex, designed by architect Fermín Vázquez (b720 Arquitectes), is envisioned as an open node, seamlessly integrated into the port environment. Its iconic architecture reinforces the “lighthouse” concept, symbolizing sustainability and Barcelona’s international projection.
The project involves the rehabilitation and transformation of existing industrial spaces, specifically abandoned sheds, into a hub for companies, research centers, and specialized talent in the blue economy.
A Consolidated Sector Seeking Further Sophistication
This physical development complements an already robust ecosystem. According to the Blue Economy Observatory, the sector generates over 11.19 billion euros in Barcelona, accounting for approximately 5% of the city’s economic activity, with productivity levels more than 20% higher than the average. This indicates that the blue economy is not merely an emerging sector but a consolidated field aiming for further scaling and sophistication.
Port Authority as an Innovation Platform
In this context, the Barcelona Port Authority seeks to strengthen its role as an innovation platform. Emma Cobos, Director of Innovation and Blue Economy Strategy, summarizes the objective: to connect global startups with real operational challenges to advance towards a “more digital, sustainable, and decarbonized” port.
This logic is shared by the World Trade Center Barcelona, which manages BlueTechPort. Its CEO, Carles Anglada, positions the program within an international positioning strategy, where opening the port as a laboratory attracts projects capable of directly transforming the port system.
Mind the Bridge’s participation underscores this global ambition. Francesca Cavanna, Head of Europe, emphasizes that ports are evolving into platforms for innovation and talent attraction. The opportunity to connect startups with an environment like Barcelona’s facilitates not only technological validation but also the creation of alliances and international scalability.
Flexible Program Design to Attract International Projects
The program’s design eliminates common barriers. Participation is free, does not require equity transfer, and does not mandate relocation, although it offers workspace at BlueTechPort. This model is designed to reduce friction and maximize the attraction of international projects in an increasingly competitive landscape of innovation hubs.
The selected areas of focus – digital ports, logistics, infrastructure resilience, sustainability, environmental monitoring, and marine biotechnology – precisely delineate the vectors of change within the sector. Digitization, energy transition, and resource management intersect in a field that is gaining increasing importance on economic agendas.
Barcelona aims to play a significant role in this arena by combining substantial economic activity, developing infrastructure, and an openness to innovation. The “lighthouse” is not merely a metaphor; it is a building under construction, a program in motion, and a strategy that seeks to further position the port – and the city – on the global map of the blue economy.
