Madrid City Council Initiates 1.1 Million Euro Renovation in Ciudad Lineal

Madrid, May 16, 2026 – The Madrid City Council, through its Works and Equipment Area, has commenced significant renovation works at the intersection of Condesa de Venadito and Martínez Villergas streets in the Ciudad Lineal district. This ambitious project, with an investment of 1.1 million euros, is projected to continue until spring 2027. The primary objectives of this initiative are to enhance accessibility, improve road safety, renew paving and urban furniture, and advance the naturalization of the urban environment.

The intervention will span a total area of 14,000 m² across Condesa de Venadito, Martínez Villergas, and Torrelaguna streets. The project’s core focus is on reordering the road network to prioritize pedestrian space and green infrastructure. This involves reducing the area designated for vehicular traffic while simultaneously increasing pedestrian zones and green areas, aiming to create a more livable and sustainable urban landscape.

Enhanced Mobility and Accessibility

In terms of mobility, the project includes a comprehensive reorganization of parking facilities. Additionally, 204 meters of bus lane will be rehabilitated, and both horizontal and vertical signage will be renewed to align with the new road configuration. These changes are expected to improve the legibility of the urban space for both drivers and pedestrians.

Accessibility will be significantly reinforced through the adaptation of various urban elements. This includes the creation of reserved parking spaces for people with reduced mobility, the establishment of new pedestrian crossings, and improved vehicle access points. Furthermore, lighting points will be relocated, and 757 meters of new public lighting conduits will be installed, contributing to a safer and better-lit environment.

Improved School Environment and Green Infrastructure

A key aspect of the renovation is the enhancement of the area surrounding the VeoVeo Early Childhood Education School. The project will expand waiting and resting areas, ensuring safer and more comfortable routes for children and their guardians. This focus on the school environment underscores the council’s commitment to creating child-friendly urban spaces.

The remodel will also substantially boost the environmental capacity of the public space. Permeable surfaces are set to increase from 39 m² to 886 m², and garden areas will expand from 39 m² to 308 m². The number of trees will see a significant rise from 26 to 89 specimens, thereby strengthening the green infrastructure. This increase in greenery is anticipated to provide more shade and reduce runoff, contributing to a healthier microclimate.

New Urban Furniture and Sustainable Paving

The project also encompasses the renewal of urban furniture, with the installation of 29 benches, six concrete benches, two children’s play areas, and a drinking fountain. Unnecessary or redundant elements will be removed to standardize and modernize the urban equipment, creating a more cohesive and aesthetically pleasing environment.

Regarding paving, the project incorporates sustainable and permeable solutions, such as draining cobblestones and concrete slabs. These will be combined with more resistant pavements in areas of vehicular traffic, ensuring durability and environmental responsibility. The use of permeable materials will aid in better water management and reduce the urban heat island effect.

The Madrid City Council’s investment in this renovation project reflects its ongoing commitment to improving urban infrastructure, promoting sustainability, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents in the Ciudad Lineal district.
